Margaret's Story

Life It is hard to imagine that it has been over 40 years since High School Graduation. I have completed a career as a school administrator, have had a family (2 young men) and have lost my best friend and husband of almost 40 years. My sons are both out of college without wives or children. I had thought that at this time in my life I would be all into my grandchildren. I am now ready to travel and enjoy what life is left for me. I am hoping to find and re-connect with some of my classmates. Most of my time is spent still renovating an historical home or boating when the weather allows. I still love to read almost anything except a newspaper which I find most depressing. I find every excuse to be outside (weather permitting), therefore I have taken to gardening, mostly flowers with a few tomato plants and herbs. I am currently looking for an interesting second career; am considering psychology in order to counsel the children who I find that I am missing during my retirement. I have so enjoyed my 37 years in education that there is a part of me that wishes to continue in that vane. My sons would like for me to sit home, travel or just do something frivolous for a change. I have not considered what I will do with the rest of my life and think sometimes that I just want to decide how to spend each day as it comes. School I will not talk about who was my biggest crush because if you were part of my group of friends you already know; there was one only, who not only did I have a crush on but was my boyfriend. Aside from crushes, I will tell you that, for as much as I loved my teachers (my parent figures), I never thought that I wanted to be an educator. Mr. William Muse not only inspired me to want to be a teacher but also inspired me to become a science/mathematics teacher. He made our class a fun place to work and learn, all of the students at Stadium had their lives enriched by his presence in our school and personal lives. There were other teachers, Ms. Kean, Ms. Flynn, and especially Mrs. Oquist who were prime examples of what ever student needs in a teacher. They are the examples that I used in my professional life as well as in my personal life. I wish I could think of crazy things that were done in school but I really can't. School was business, a business that I loved but only saw its completion as a way to get to the next step. My most joyful memories were w...Expand for more
ith my beloved friends and classmates, Junior NAACP with Mr. Muse and Mr. (Now Judge) Tanner, dancing, skating parties, being able to hang with adults who listen and respected opinions from those so much younger. These activities gave an importance to all of the students who were in my friendship group. Reconnecting with a few of you from the past has been very important to me. I look forward to hearing from and seeing others who I have been unable to contact. College College was a necessary ingredient to getting to a profession for me. Tacoma General Nursing School and UPS were nightmares; I was a fish out of water experience. College life for me started with Highland Park Community college, Wayne State University and University of Michigan. My undergrad experience was as a married woman; I started without children and when I finished 4 years later I had two children. Both of my children grew up in a college setting. Their father taught at the college level and I tutored chemistry at Highland Park Community College. Both young men learned as we learned. My masters is in Instructional Programming; part of it was learning to program a computer. My sons were taught programming as I learned it; sometimes they taught me what I had taught them. I can remember sitting working for hours on an animation program and just could not get the thing to move. I awaken the next morning to find stuff running all over the screen; my youngest son simply looked over the program that I had written, found an error and corrected it. He was all of about 8 years of age and did not think that he had done anything extraordinary. Workplace I started out as a telephone operator after deciding that nursing was not for me. Relocated to Detroit, my husband's home and worked with Project Read. I could not transfer to Detroit from Pacific Northwest Bell because the telephone company in Detroit did not want to hire someone who was also going to college. I worked at several menial jobs while putting myself through college at Wayne State University. Later, I decided that I should go back for my MA since my sons were in High School. I became an administrator immediately after completing my masters. I was the Assistant Principal at Jamieson Elementary School for four years and the Principal at Ann Arbor Trail Magnet for 14 years. My career has been very rewarding and one that I relinquish with reservations.
