Margarita's Story
As a an observant kid, then wife, mother and grandmother I gathered stories about family and neighbors that eventually made it into my musings. For years I was a "closet" writer afraid to share my thoughts. When my first child entered school I began writing in earnest, late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. I worked as Regional Director for U. S. Senator Phil Gramm and traveled across the state and encountered different cultures and met people in a variety of professions and different levels of government.
Then I wrote a column in the El Paso Times exploring the border culture for almost four years. Sometimes my kids learned about antics they never knew and Mama wondered how I remembered so many things from childhood. "Stories from the Barrio and Other 'Hoods" is a compilation of some columns from the Times and other publications. "Border Buster" is my novel...Expand for more
about a beautiful El Paso Mayor fighting drugs and corruption on both sides of the border. It is a fictional account but some of what I wrote later became reality and caused my husband to wonder if the drug lords would come after me. I replied, "They will never read my book," and I don't think they have. "Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul" and "Mezcla" include two of my stories. Brown Eyed Girl Musings.com is a blog where I post some of my thoughts and observations.
Years ago I felt validated when Olga Abraham, my English teacher sought my advice on writing a story about a relative. Sadly it was her obituary in the Times last week that reminded me of that. I have fond memories of a beautiful young teacher who sponsored the cheerleaders and drove us to exchange assemblies. May she rest in peace. I look forward to seeing classmates and hope that you will remember me.
