Margot's Story

Well, hello all you folks out there. It's been thirty years since I've laid eyes on, or talked to any of you but Kaye Koenig, Melanie Henderson, Beth Henry and Jim and Jackie Young! What a small group compared to the multitudes of people who graduated with our class. Where to begin? I've been to the mountain tops and down in the valley many times since 1978. Mostly in the valley! However the valley seems to have sifted me quite a bit and done me quite a bit of good. I've had many jobs although never one in journalism, my major, or speech and drama my minor at University of Southern Mississippi. Mostly I've been a fund raiser or salesperson. I had a real estate business for a brief moment in Jackson, MS but even that doesn't seem to be my calling! I've learned that God will put you where you should be! Now I'm in Birmingham, AL taking care of my beautiful three year old son with Down Syndrome. Many of you may not know how I can say dear or that I am blessed, but let me tell you I am! I moved here so he can be near all the best medical experts in heart surgery, ear surgery and occupational, speech and physical therapy. My daughter, Ashley Weilenman, yes Joe Weilenman's child (my first husband) moved here to be near us. She has been an invaluable help to me. Currently, I'm not working outside the home but have started...Expand for more
a business as an artist. In addition to portraits I paint on consignment I'm working on a series of paintings of children with disabilities. The series consists of seven paintings all coinciding with the seven days of creation in Genesis. I hope to show the beauty of these disabled children and how God created them just as He has created everything else in the world. I believe that God has a plan for every one of us and although it may not be easy it will be beautiful in the end. If anyone had told me I would have a disabled child I would have been distraught and totally unable to comprehend the beauty of this. I remember when my doctor asked or recommended that I have the test to see if I was pregnant with a disabled child so I could, "take care of it" I told him it wasn't necessary because I would have this child regardless. In my younger years I would not have said these words! Low and behold a few months later I had Alex. I fought with the wonder of it all for two weeks after my child was born. Finally he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. By that time, I had told myself that whatever the test results were it was OK. However, it took two years to truly recover. Anyway, I could go on and on, but really what it all boils down to is, life is good! Life is wonderful! A disabled child is a blessing in the first degree!
