Maria's Story
My story... well, other than having nine lives like a cat, I am doing pretty good for an old-young woman. My two boys, now 15 and 12 are keeping my husband and I young! Although both boys have their issues, we are working closely with the schools and professionals to ensure they will become productive and independent young man some day. It has been an up hill battle since the time they were born. We are older parents and do not have family support around us to help out. We have been hands on parents from the get-go. I quit my career back in 2003 to raise both boys. My husband is now retired after serving 35 years of federal service. I just started working for the Fairfax County Public School system early this year. My husband serves on the PTA. dest has been riding horses for six years at LMU! to improve motor planning and coordination.
Since quiting my job, I have met so many fantastic people as a result of my son's diagnosis of Autism.! He is high functioning and has been mainstreamed since kindergarten. Because of all the services we have obtained for my son (professional, medical, etc) I have learned to wear many hats in addition to the "mom" hat (speech therapist, occupational therapist, nurse, educational advocate, social worker, behaviour specialist, etc..). All in all, life has been good!
My folks are still alive and living in Florida. Dad will be 87 years of age this September, and Mom will be 86 in December. They are not in the best of health but they are still semi-independent (the live in an ALF).
I would be more comfortable if I could get them closer to me so I could keep an eye out on them.
