Maria's Story
Hi everyone, most of you will remember me by Terri Urino, Student Body Secretary in 1962.(See our Golden
Annual). I finally retired July, 2013 after many years of dedicated work with the developmentally challenged. This has been a most rewarding experience of my life along with traveling as much as it permits.
I'm now a volunteer at a Hospice facility. You might ask why at a hospice? It's been a long desire of mine to do this. It all started way back in 1998 when I committed to a training as part of my job to volunteer and make home and facility visits to check on the status, living conditions and welfare of clients that regional center serviced. The social worker I was assigned to, to make these visits had a client in a hospice place by the family. After completing the visit with the client, I wondered around the facility and noting that some seniors had NO VISITORS. working more than 8 hours a day, I understood it was not easy to be around your loved ones and provide the special care needed to your loved one. I am sure there must be thousands of other concrete reasons we have why we can't fit a visit to those we love so dearly.
So I started talking to some of the seniors, men and women. They were delighted to have someone (a complete stranger) visiting with them. It totally broke my heart. That did it for me. I love what I do. It's a blessing to know that some of these men and women did not pass knowing that someone was there to hold there hand, pray, and let them know it was okay for them to go to their peaceful final rest.
On the brighter side of my life. I was blessed with 5 children, in the order they were born, Lillian, Debbi, Christopher, Luis, and Andrea. I have 19 grand children and 12 great grand children. They are all the love of my life.
