Maria's Story
I went to college at Willamette University in Salem, and got a BA in Econ/Poli Sci. Have been working in commercial real estate (finance, development, investment) for most of my career, mostly in Seattle but also for 7 years in San Francisco. My first husband was Thom Gunn, he's a writer and lives on Whidbey Island, we are still great friends but I divorced him in about 2016 and he introduced me to my current husband, who I have literally been imagining since I was 12 - Joe Breskin. (They grew up together on Mercer Island.) I work for Paul Allen (Vulcan), can’t use the past tense, we loved him dearly. I've been at Vulcan for 20 years now and have done all the financing for our South Lake Union projects....Expand for more
Neither Joe nor I have children but we both have nephews who we are very close to - one of Joe’s co-founded the band the Posies, and one of mine has been in many bands including Math and Physics Club and Model Shop. I've lost both my parents but am very close to my sister and her husband, who are both teachers. And I still visit my German exchange family almost every year (after spending half my junior year of high school in Hamburg in 1972), that experience (and having those people become part of my life) was one of the best things ever. I'm a past president of the Junior League of Seattle and currently on the boards of Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pilchuck Glass School, ArtsFund, and Bumbershoot.
