Marianne's Story

Life 3/19/03 I had gastric bypass; lost 137 lbs! Feel great, highly recommend it! Tom & I work for San Diego county since 1987; married since 4/25/75; he's a keeper! We met at Scott AFB in Belleville, Illinois. In 1980 he went to Officer Training School, then we were off to Okinawa, Japan. I'm a graphic artist at San Diego County Parks, Tom is a Benefits analyst at S. D. County Foster Care. We are active in church, have a cat Peaches, we adopted her from our priest friend and enjoy travel, bridge, concerts and spontaneity. I also serve as editor of the American Legion Auxiliary newsletter. Soon I will be creating artwork for Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town San Diego for sale in the gift shop. Found my BEST FRIEND Jane in the military brats site. She & I met as "O Dubs" (Officer wives) in Okinawa 80-83. We were both AF brats/wives, & editors of "Over the Line" Air Force Officers Wives Club magazine. She and her husband now live in Dallas, and they visit us here or we visit them there. I'd love to hear from you too, AF Brats! Especially Kay Arfaris, Jeanette French & Karen Gunderson. College I earned a degree in Architectural Graphics, and was the first president of Phi Theta Kappa honor society at Cuyamaca College. I maintained a 3.85 GPA much to the amazement of my parents and me! My husband was not surprized at all and very proud of my accomplishments. My job as a drafting technician at San Diego County parks often entails drafting and rendering architectural plans, landscape plans, irrigation plans and special events posters. Wor...Expand for more
kplace After a lifetime of travel as an AF brat & wife, settled in San Diego, CA when we returned from Kadena AFB, Okinawa in 1983. For many years I worked as a temp/part time as a graphic artist trying to get my foot in the door somewhere, anywhere in SD! My husband got out of the AF after serving as SDSU AFROTC instructor. In 1987 he began working for the county of San Diego in Social Services. I applied and finally landed a full time permanent job as a mapping / drafting tech in Cartographic Services with SD County. In 1989 I was promoted and transferred to SD County parks as a graphic artist/drafting tech. My job description varies from creating signs and flyers for special events to using Autocad to design park playgrounds, architectural plans and irrigation systems, etc. In the meantime I earned a degree in Architectural Graphics and graduated in 1992; been with Parks ever since. I love my job, the people I work with but the building we are in sucks! It's an old warehouse with no windows, no air circulation, etc., but other than that, I am happy where I am. Military Just to clarify, I was not actually in the military, I was born and married into it and loved it! I have a lot of respect for our military troops and our Commander in Chief. The lifestyle is often misrepresented in the movies. I traveled all over the US, Europe and Asia. My best friend Jane and both met in Okinawa in 1980 when our husbands were stationed at Kadena. She and I both treasure our friendship and our experiences as AF brats/wives. I could go on and on, but I won't unless you ask!
