Marianne's Story

Life : I taught physical education for 37 years and retired on 6/6/15. My favorite memory in teaching was when I was very honored to be nominated for the O.C.C. Teacher-of-the-Year in 2011. My first 11 years of teaching P.E. were in high school and the last 26 were in easier elementary. Most of my teaching, 27 years, was in Oceanside and I taught in San Bernardino for the first 10 years of my career. I absolutely love living in Carlsbad and I have been married to Tom for 36 years. He is a national strategic accounts manager with Tennant Company. We have three incredibly wonderful children who have NEVER EVER been any trouble for us at all. Our daughter, Shelly (26) graduated from Loyola Marymount (Los Angeles) in May 2012; is the VP for Apogee Culinary Designs, LLC; is a Bar Method instructor in Bressi Ranch (Carlsbad) and lives with us. Our son, Chris (34) graduated from National University in August 2007, works for the City of Carlsbad in the engineering department, is an avid fisherman (has his own boat), lives in Carlsbad and married the lovely Stephanie Lyn in June 2014. Our other daughter, Stephanie Marie (31) married in August 2005, graduated from California State University San Marcos in May 2007, runs the nursery at Las Flores Nazarene Church and is an outstanding mother with her sweet children, Natalie Marie (born on 3-2-10) and Matthew Thomas (born on 11-22-11). She also lives in Carlsbad with her handsome husband, Phil who is an excellent father, is a senior reverend with the Nazarene Church, owns a video/DVD/photography business, and works for Royal Company. We delight in every moment we get to spend with our treasured grandchildren. My very favorite place in the whole wide world is Catalina Island and II have traveled all over the U.S.; Mexico; throughout Europe; and to islands in the Caribbean & the Bahamas. My second favorite place is Maui and probably a lot of people feel the same way about that special island. I have been to the Hawaiian Islands eight times (so far) and three of the trips have been to Maui. Our family vacationed there for 8 super fun-filled days in July 2005. In March 2004, I went to Curacao, an island off of the coast of Venezuela, next to the island of Aruba. The brilliant colors of the ocean in the lovely Caribbean are a truly awesome sight...one I hope I will always remember. In March 2005, I traveled to the resort of Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. This place is absolutely breath-taking! The whole island is dedicated to this huge, lavish resort. Atlantis has been rated as one of ...Expand for more
the top 10 resorts in the world (according to the experts on the Travel Channel) and I agree!! During the summers of 2006, 2007, 2011 and in the Fall of 2012, I visited the Colorado Rocky Mountain area with tour guide/special friend Rich Kann, who lives nearby. Seeing those splendid mountains brought new meaning to the words of John Denver's song regarding their incredible beauty. When I went to Cabo San Lucas in 2007, I spent almost all of my time in a huge, magnificent pool that was right on the beach! In April/May of 2014, Tom and I traveled to Ireland on another free trip he won for us with his job. The Irish are very nice and extremely accommodating towards Americans so we highly recommend others to put visiting Ireland on their list of places to explore. I love to travel because I really enjoy the adventure of discovering new places and meeting new people. School : I had such a great time in high school. I felt extremely comfortable, safe, and happy at Troy. I respected all of my teachers, so I guess I was lucky to have had all of the good ones! Everyone was always so nice to me. I think there are a lot of people who cannot say the same thing about their own high school experience. I am still enjoying several lifelong friendships which began at Troy High and at Ladera Vista Junior High. My favorite times were as a member of the different singing groups (especially Madrigals) and as the Bat Girl for the Varsity Baseball Team. These activities made my senior year SO MUCH fun! I will always be grateful for the wonderful memories I have from being a Warrior. College : My first two years of college were at Fullerton College. I was on the Drill Team both years, I was the Bat Girl both years, and I was the Homecoming Queen during my second year. I earned an A.A. Degree in Phys. Educ. and transferred to California State University Long Beach. I joined the Alpha Phi Sorority and earned my B.A. Degree in Phys. Educ. While I was in college, I focused on starting my career as a P.E. teacher, working at Disneyland as a ride operator in Fantasyland, and dating Tom, who ended up being my husband. Workplace : I always taught full time and I always expected that of myself. I planned on being a P.E. teacher ever since I was in the sixth grade! We have three children, so continuing to do that was not easy. I loved my career and it suited me perfectly. I was so lucky to have had such a rewarding job. I feel extremely fortunate to have been an elementary P.E. teacher...it was SO MUCH MORE FUN than being a high school P.E. teacher!! :)
