Marie's Story

Hi everyone! My name, Marie Booth, is now Marie Durrant. I grew up on a farm about 5 miles east of Weiser. until I was 16 and moved into Weiser. I loved to read and other than that I was quite a 'Tom-boy'. I worked in my Dad's and the neighbor's fields. I attended a one-room country school out there called "Jeffrey's School". There were only a few students, so mostly what we did, we did together. In order to have a team such as football or baseball, it took everyone. Unless you cried, of course, So when you quit crying about being tackled or hit by a ball you were ready to be on the team. I loved the school. When it closed I went to 8th grade at the Jr. High in Weiser. It was a bit of culture shock. I had to wear a dress everyday! Then I could see my friends I had played football with the year before practicing and playing games on the football field.. How dare I couldn't go out there and play? My friends out there were starters on the team and they had practiced on me! The girls played jump rope and 4-square. In dresses, of course! No girl sports at school back then and I couldn't afford to join the Girl's Athletic Club. After my first indignation I did enjoy going to school there and to the High School. After graduating, I moved to Nampa, took some business classes, and worked at a loan company and also in the office at an upscale department stor...Expand for more
e. I got married and lived in the Kuna/Meridian area. We also lived six years in Kaysville, UT and a couple of years in Ohio. When we were in Idaho we always lived on a farm. I love the farm and am still a farm-girl at heart. My husband was in Construction and I worked with him in that. He passed away in 2010. I still live on one of the farms, but lease them out. I have a home office where I do the office work for one of the businesses my husband had of which I am 50% owner. My favorite thing I did was teaching a children's art class. When I began I found out there were children very interested in art whose parents could not afford to give them lessons. So I did everyone's lessons free. The benefit for me was that way it didn't seem like 'work' and I didn't need the money, anyway. So I just had a lot of fun with them and loved watching their faces when they comprehended something new they suddenly could 'see' what it was they were doing. Unfortunately, after my husband passed away, I couldn't keep up with everything and finally had to give up my art class. I love to work in Graphite, oil, and watercolor. I intend to stay on the farm as long as I live or until I am demented and they haul me away It was great knowing you all.
