Marie's Story

Life- I taught school in Ridgefield Park NJ, Slingerlands Elementary School in NY, and St. Martin's Academy in La Mesa, CA. When I had children, I moved on to administration and served as president of our district school board for many years. Married for 46 years my husband and I have two children and two grandchildren. For fun, I scuba dive, ski, write, play tennis and bridge. My husband and I have a 17 piece swing band and perform concerts..Find us on the web at rsfbb.com. He plays the trumpet and I'm the vocalist. We've lived in California since 1971, since he was stationed at Balboa Naval Hospital as Lt. Commander and staff Psychiatrist during Viet Nam. Photo was taken 3 years ago as I completed my term as president of our town's board of directors. I am now editor-in-chief of La Chaine des Rotisseurs -food and wine magazine; Gastronome. I like to keep busy. School Most of the time I took the bus on Palisade Ave to school, but I remember fantastic, balmy spring walks from the "Heights" in Jersey City all the way to Dickinson. Saint Nickolas Elementary School was small and sheltered, which made a high school of 3000 kids seem like an alien world. There were only a handful of us from St. Nick's, so I hardly knew anyone in my homeroom or classes. The kids from the public elementary schools seemed to have their acts together mu...Expand for more
ch better than we did. I don't think I learned that much in high school except how to survive adolescence. I remember some really special friends, some fun in academic and social clubs, writing a lot of poetry and singing in a singing group. College In 1963 Jersey City State was not yet a university, but it taught many of us Jersey kids that there was more out there than we thought. I've used my education and degrees from JCSC all my life, and I've never stopped singing since a Concert Choir try out with Doc Hansler that first September. I had so much fun with our singing group the 4+4. I keep in touch with a few of the group, and we have many good memories of performing at "State" and in the Village, with Doc Hansler always in the audience. We were the first ones to record, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It became a hit about 10 years later for Roberta Flack when she performed it for the movie "Play Misty for Me." I met my husband of 46 years in my junior year at State, when he was visiting from medical school, lunching in the snack bar with his high school buddies. Jersey City State has been good to me, and was the pivotal point of my life. In this time of my life I really cherish memories of dear friends and classmates and look forward to hearing from you. I hope all is well and that good memories enhance your days and seasons.
