Marietta's Story

After school got out in June 1962 I found a job to help with the expenses for my wedding in January. My first job was at Title insurace Co. in downtown in San Diego. I stayed there until the end of March in 1964. Tony and I were married on January 26, 1963 in St. Patrick's Church, San Diego. In November of that year, we took a Greyhound bus trip to Denver to meet Tony's family. Our bus was stopped by a Sheriff in Northern Arizona to inform the passengers that JFK was killed in Dallas earlier that day. The rest of the bus ride was in silence. In April 1964, Tony got out of the Navy and wanted to move back to Colorado. I said YES, but if I didn't like it we would move back to San Diego. At that point in my life, I had never lived anywhere else and I was 7 months pregnant. We shipped what we had to his family and flew to Denver. Tony was lucky, he got a job with Western Electric(A T & T, and Lucent) by the end of May 1964. He stayed with them a total of 38 years. Michael Anthony was born on June 19, 1964 in Denver. He was a fast learner as a baby. He was walking at 8 months and he never stopped moving. After graduating from High School, Mike went in the Navy and later worked on fishing boats out of Alaska; diving in Hawaii and Florida. Mike passed away at 34 in Florida. He had been married a couple times but no children. In January 1965 we moved to Colorado Springs on a Temperary Transfer. Tony worked in Cheyenne Mountain, the military center called NORAD. Jerome Alan was born on November 11, 1965 in Colorado Springs. Jerry always liked construction, like his Grandpa Z. His jobs were always in construction. Due to vehicle and on the job accidents, Jerry can not do phyical work. He is waiting for knee surgery and hip replacement surgery. He may be waiting a long time with what insurance he has. Jerry never married and is living in Escondido. After Jerry was born, I wanted to wait awhile before having anymore babies. At the 6 weeks check-up, the doctor gave me the prescription for birth control pills, but what he forgot to do was tell me to wait until I had been on the pills for 2 months. Surprise!! I was pregant again! Tony didn't know where he was going to be stationed by September so we decided the boys and I moved to my Mom and Dad's in San Diego. We flew out in July with no problems. Tony ended up back in Denver again. He had to take his vacation the middle of September, but the baby still hadn't come yet. The first week flew by, no baby. The second week was going by fast. On Thursday, we spent the day with Pat and Chet Thurston(Snodgrass) and family. We went home around 7pm. I wasn't feeling very good and I turned down cherry pie. Mom knew something was wrong. By 8:30pm we were at Mercy Hospital delivery room and they were telling me not to push. Tina Marie was born on September 22, 1966, in Mercy Hospital We went home on Saturday morning and Tina was Baptized on Sunday afternoon. Tony had to be at the airport by 6:00 to fly back to Denver. The kids and I stayed at my parents until Tina was 6 weeks old. My dad flew with the kids and I back to Denver. Tony and his Dad met us at the airport with winter jackets and baby blankets. They had a bad snow storm in Denver that day. My dad hadn't shoveled snow since he left Nebraska in 1938. He had a lot of fun. Tina completed high school and got married. She and Jeff had two kids, a girl and then a boy. They stayed married for 10 years and shared joint custody of the kids while they were still in school. Tina works for a property management company in Vista and also works for Qualcom Stadium during football season. She is always busy, she resently moved to San Diego & loves it. Tony finally got his transfer back to San Diego and We moved back in April 1968. In June 1971 we bought our first home in El Cajon. It was a good thing because by November I was pregant again. Steven Andrew was born in August, 1972 at Grossmont Hospital, in La Mesa. He just didn't want to be born. He was due July 19th and came August 14. I had...Expand for more
been to the doctors twice during that day, took cod liver oil, and the doctor finally said to meet him at the hospital. We dropped off the kids at my aunt's and went to the hospital. The nurse checked me, said do not push. We were on our way down the hall with the doctor running after us. He was my biggest baby, 8lbs 3 ozs and 22 1/2 " long. He spent his teen years in Las Vegas, Nevada. Steve and his girlfriend Andrea live in Henderson, Nevada. They both work in the Casino/Restraunt business. Steve is a cook and Andrea works as a waitress. They both have a hard time getting jobs with benefits. They have 4 dogs instead of children. They have been together for 15 years. Grandchildren-Danielle Nicole Bauer was born August,1989 in Escondido, CA. She Graduated from San Pasqual High School and Cal-Luthern College in Thousand Oaks, CA over a year ago with her Master's. Danielle is a beautiful girl! She works & lives in San Diego and has a great boyfriend. - Kevin Bauer was born in September, 1993 in Escondido. Kevin graduated from San Pasqual High School & now is working for a company in San Marcos. In June 1987, Tony was sent to Vegas on a Temporary Transfer. Steven was 14, we decided to move to Vegas. During those years, I worked for a Woodworking Company that made special furniture for casinos and custom homes. After 14 months I was laid off do to no work in Vegas. I then got a job as Office Manager for a Air Ambulance Company/Charter Company/Aircraft Owner Company. The 3 Companies worked together as one. We left the Las Vegas/Henderson area after 13 years, in January 2000 to live in Trinidad, CO for the next 3 years. Tony was transferred to Denver, but could work from home. He was gone more than he was home. In 2001, Tony retired and took a part-time job driving a school bus in Trinidad. I worked for a Oil Company/Convenience Stor Chain for over a year and then took a job with the Trinidad School District Office. I was doing all the accounts payables and ordering supplies for the schools. In June 2003, we finally sold our home in Trinidad and moved back to San Diego. I fould a job with a Law Firm in Scripps Ranch. I was there until March 2011, when I was laid off due to a location move and purchase of a new building. I was there for over 7 years. I spent over a year looking for a new job, but those were hard years and Tony was getting sick. In December 2012, we found out Tony had ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. What a horrible disease. I became his full time caregiver. It was so hard for him to realize he could never drive again. Between all the doctor visits and telephone calls to get information & help, I needed my own assistant. I learned a lot about ALS and the fact that the doctors at the San Diego Veterans Hospital don't know how to work together and work with the families. Thanks to the PVA, Paralized Veterans Association, I was able to find out what Tony qualified for and where to get help and assistance. After 13 agonizing months, Tony passed away on January 8th, 2014. Due to the doctors at Kaiser(they couldn't make a decision as to what words to use on his Death Certificate), Tony was laid to rest on January 23rd 2014 at the new Miramar VA Cemetery. The last 15 months have been busy for me. I decided to fix up the Mobil home and sell it. In January of this year I found a Condo to rent in the Bay Park area of San Diego(I'm off Morena Blvd, across from the Mission Bay Hilton). With the close of escrow on the 29th, I moved to the new location on the 23rd. My sister Judy lives in Clairemont and her daughter's family is 4 blocks from me. On Sunday mornings we all go to St Mary Magdalene's to Mass. I'm settling in still, my guest room still has boxes to empty. Tony and I missed being married 51 years by 18 days, so we had a lot of things. Hopefully, I can get it done soon. I'm wanting to do some traveling; trip to Maui, a cruise to Alaska, and a trip to Italy & Germany. Sounds great! Does anyone want to join me? I'm now retired and looking for things to do and see.
