Marilyn's Story

Life After college I went overseas (Europe and West Africa) were my Dad was working. I spent a year with my parents, then had a short 2 yr marriage to a man from Holland. Returned to the States in 1977 and begin working as a federal employee. In 1980 married Newell Oler. I became a widow in 2001, when Newell died of ALS (Lou Gerhigs disease). In 2003, I married Rodger Bick, an MD & PHD in Hematology. He is a California/Texan. I retired on January 3, 2008 and love the fact that when I wake up each morning, I don't have to do or be anywhere, except where I want to be. Rodger is semi-retired. We both love being on the Ocean and sailing. He is active as a volunteer in the Coast Guard in southern California as well as in in Texas. We have decided to make Texas (Dallas) our permanent residence with California our vacation place. With retirement we will spend more time just doing whatever we feel like doing and nothing more. School I enjoyed High School, but could not wait to finish. Therefore, I finished in 3 yrs instead of the 4 yr norm. This was accomplished thru Summer School attendance. I did not join many school groups/organizations, as I was always studying. I was mainly involved with the local Rainbow Girls chapter and the youth group at Easthaven Baptist. I had one really close "best frien...Expand for more
d" from 9th grade on, Debbie Smith. We kept in touch thru the years and until she died of cancer in 2004. The good really do die young. College I attended MC for two years and then Southern, where I finished in 1973 with a BA in Art Education. I pledged a sorority at Southern and enjoyed my time at school. My parents were living overseas during all my college years, so I was very independent. I enjoyed visiting them each summer and one semester, I took a break from school and spent about 8 months overseas. I guess you can say that my college years were the "golden" and carefree days of my youth. Workplace I started work at the IRS in Dallas District in 1977 as a Group Clerk with "Intelligence Division" as it was known then, and now as CID. After a year, I moved to Facilities as a Management Analyst. I left the District in 1984 and moved to the Regional Office (also in Dallas) as a Space (Workspace budget and design) Analyst. I remained in Facilities,as the name changed to Resources Management, Support Services, etc. Then in 2001, I moved to DP Services/MITS as a Program Coordinator. I retired on January 3, 2008. The great thing about being a federal retiree is that FEDS get to retire when with 30 yrs of work and are at least 55 years old. I met my 30 years at age 56, so I'm done with work.
