Marilyn's Story
We arrived in 1959 to our Miami Beach home (Key West tourist ferry from Havana). Soon our father went to fight in Bay of Pigs. We received him at Orange Bowl when Pres. Kennedy brought prisoners of war back in 1962. Our grandfather returned to Cuba & was not allowed out till 1969. It was mother, grandmother, sister, and brother living at Prairie with no idea of country or return. This made no sense...Expand for more
to me at 4 and for many years later--Miami Beach was very traditional in many ways (esp. my neighborhood), and some other aspects of it made no sense whatsoever (all-night Fun Fair), so perhaps it was the right city to raise me. I studied English and wrote, not realizing I was making sense of the incoherent. I learned: when you lose, don't lose the lesson, and there were many gifts in those lessons.
