Marilyn's Story
Marilyn is from Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. She is married to Roland Chapman, and they have 5 kids and 8 grandchildren. Her schools include Richmond High School. She later attended University of British Columbia (BEd Elementary _ Primary and Special Education), then did a Masters at Western Washington University, followed by a PhD at the University of Victoria. She is a Full Professor at the University of British Columbia, in the Department of Language and Literacy Education, and the Director of the Institue for Early Childhood Education and Research (IECER).
Marilyn and Roland have five adult children - Dan (Michele) and Cathy live in Langley; Tracy lives in Sunnyvale, California; Sean lives in Tsawwassen, ad Lindsey lives in Burnaby. They have 8 grandchildren (5 boys and 3 girls): Spencer (2001), Nolan, (2007), and Brady (2005) in Langley; Jake (2000) and Kyle (2002) in Sunnyvale; Trinity (2000) and Aliyah (2011) in Burnaby, and Kaitlyn (2005) in Tsawwassen.
Marilyn's work interests include language and literacy education and early childhood education. Personal interests include spending time with family and friends, singing, dancing, and riding her bike. She sings (first soprano) with a local ensemble of 16, called Sound Eclectic. They perform at small gigs - seniors' centres, etc. She loves to exercise - rides her bike to UBC campus most days, does salsa aerobics several times week, and also spin bike classes, and yoga. She likes to read a lot of non-ficti...Expand for more
on (especially brain research), and also historical fiction, and murder mysteries. TV shows she likes include Downton Abbey, Bomb Girls, The Good Wife (all good drama series) and Charlie Rose, for interesting interviews (though she often turns it off when the topic is US politics!)
One of Marilyn's favorite quotes is:"Ultimately, "success" in our work world and in our life does not rest with external rewards or achievements. What matters most is how much love and goodness our existence has added to the planet, how effectively we have engaged with the people we cherish most, and how much we have been able to locate our own sense of deep composure right in the midst of the messiness of life. Marc Lesser, 2009".
More about Marilyn:"Loving life - wonderful husband, kids (now grown) and 8 grandchildren. Many great friends. Still passionate about my profession (after 47 years, mostly full time), though wanting more time to spend with family and friends, to travel, and pursue my hobbies (singing, dancing, riding my bike)." She is planning to get back to playing the piano - jazz this time rather than classical, but has trouble finding the time to fit it in. Roland and Marilyn love to travel. They've been to Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, China, and Mexico. Travel provides the motivation to keep up her French and Spanish. Marilyn has done a fair amount of work in Taiwan, but only knows how to say "thank you" in Mandarin! They are looking forward to visiting Thailand and South America.
