Marilyn's Story

02.21.2024: retired finally from a long and rewarding career cited below. spending time these days painting, writing, musing about life, death, the pursuits of the haves and the have nots, wondering if (dare i say hoping?) what i have done in my life will matter after i've moved on to.... i would like to believe i will leave the world a better place for having been in it.... We have all grown into who we became in spite of or because of who we were when we last knew, or walked the same hallways as, each other. i wish everyone well, whether we knew or liked each other then- i have found myself to be infinitely more open-hearted as i move into the latter stages of my life. Contact will be returned with anyone who reaches out. My apologies if i ignored any overtures before this- my time is now my own. I don't really work for the Thurston County Sheriff's Office- but it wouldn't let me write what i really do, REAL TIME CSI- I work as the lead/senior death investigator for the County Coroner's Office for the last going-on 24 years. It's nothing like TV or the movies- it's much more profound. I have always had a fascination with death and dying, the afterlife, karma, past lives, etc. Worked for Hospice here in WA for several years before coming to the Coroner's Office. This has been a very fulfilling and challenging profession. I am able to be of enormous service to my community, help people understand what has happened to a loved one, assist oth...Expand for more
ers in coming to terms with traumatic loss, do research, train others, develop my own sensibilities around compassion, respect for others, integrity and presence in the world. After going to national and international conferences for several years, i was tapped to do trainings, and have recently been asked to participate in a book project that the editors hope to be one of the premier reads on working with suicidal individuals, family members and others who have survived the death of a loved one by suicidal means. It has been intense but deeply meaningful work. I live in Olympia, WA, across from one of the inlets to Puget Sound. Several yrs ago, I went to Lahore, Pakistan, to meet the family of my former love, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. I was welcomed with open arms- the Pakistani people are lovely, warm, delightful folks. Everywhere we went, people were friendly and helpful. The picture is of myself and Zahid's eldest sister (i didn't know how to crop it, so i just put the whole thing on the site). It has been quite a ride getting from Bellmore to here! Anyone who remembers me is welcome to get in touch. I hope anyone who reads this has had a wonderful last 40 years, or at least an adventure getting from there to wherever you are now. My name is now Madelyn Schwartz- i changed it after my mother told me that my name was wrong on my birth certificate, and that it was supposed to be Madelyn. Never liked the name Marilyn anyway....
