Marilyn Chotem:  

I left Seattle in 1966 to study at the University of Denver, then transferred to UC Berkeley in 1969, at the height of political activism, drugs, and counterculture. I majored in Design (Ceramic), worked for a few years as a starving artist, mostly sewing costumes (and occasionally designing them) at a theatre company in Napa Valley. In 1974, I moved to Victoria, BC, Canada to start an MA in Counselling Psychology. I worked in addiction treatment for five years, then started working in community mental health centres in the interior of BC before moving to Montreal in 1986 to start my doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and Counselling. I met my husband shortly after moving to Montreal. We had our first date on February 15, 1987; married October 31, 1987; had our first child on October 4, 1988.
