Marilyn's Story

I left Seattle in 1966 to study at the University of Denver, then transferred to UC Berkeley in 1969, at the height of political activism, drugs, and counterculture. I majored in Design (Ceramic), worked for a few years as a starving artist, mostly sewing costumes (and occasionally designing them) at a theatre company in Napa Valley. In 1974, I moved to Victoria, BC, Canada to start an MA in Counselling Psychology. I worked in addiction treatment for five years, then started working in community mental health centres in the interior of BC before moving to Montreal in 1986 to start my doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and Counselling. I met my husband shortly after moving to Montreal. We had our first date on February 15, 1987; married October 31, 1987; had our first child on October 4, 1988. I finished my dissertation and degree in June 1989, and the three of us moved to Victoria, BC where I returned to an old job in a r...Expand for more
esidential treatment centre for Canadian military with addiction issues. Working full-time with an infant was heart wrenching, so we moved to North Vancouver, BC in November 1989 and are still in the same house. My daughter is now 21 and my son is 17 and in his final year of high school. I have been working in a psychiatric unit 1/2 time doing psychological assessments since 2004, and doing a 1/2-time private practice, which will sustain us when salaried employment ends in 4 years. My husband is a musician, and a kind, gentle soul. He, too, will be working well beyond 65. He teaches guitar, performs, records, composes, etc. I get to use my design skills doing graphics for him, which is great fun. Not sure how good my graphics are, but I love the creative process. I am a bit of a fitness type. I bicycle to work and do a long dog walk daily. I'm convinced it keeps me young, as does having children late in life. Life is good.
