Marius's Story
Life
I didn't do my best in high school and really don't have an answer for "Why not?". My best guess is that after having been an "A" student in Jr. High, I went to LaSalle and didn't like it. I didn't realize that I could just ... leave and go to Vets like all my friends. By the time I did leave LaSalle, it was not on the best terms and I had to play catch up, socially.
Beginning when I was 21, I spent the next 14 years as a pro musician enjoying everything that went with it. After reaching all my goals, I left music rather than do a long album promotion tour, and began college at age 35. The rest is, as they say, history.
At that same time, I got back into playing ball by joining a softball team in the over 35 league here in Warwick. That has evolved into playing in the over 50 league where I'm still playing 2 games every Sunday morning.
That league currently has 28 teams and will expand again next year. Also, there are tournaments held around the country and special teams get together to play in them. I've gotten to play in tournaments held in Arizona, Michigan, Florida, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts. My current travel team ("CAPTIV"), is ranked at #13 nationally in the "AA" 55+ division. I've also competed in the National Senior Olympics. I'm seriously considering going to the RedSox Fantasy camp in Spring, 2004. It would be a great 60th birthday gift to myself ... especially considering that I've been a die-hard Bosox fan since the days of Walt Dropo, Mel Parnell, Sammy White, Dom Dimaggio and, my hero, Teddy Ballgame.
I'm thankful that I've been blessed with the good health and fitness that has allowed me to play ball, ski, roller blade and play golf.
My primary goal, now, is to remain as healthy as possible and to keep moving and be competitive, physically. Secondarily, I'd like to "reach out and touch" old friends with whom I've had no contact for many years. One can never go back, but to move forward with a new perspective is a great alternative in my book.
Oh by the way, I was married once upon...Expand for more
a time. There were no children and I've never remarried.
School
Sorry, I don't care to talk much about High School. My time there, was not the best it could have been. Leaving LaSalle cost me a grade so I graduated in '63 ... an not '62. Simply stated, I f....d up.
There were, however, some highlights that will stay with me forever.
I still play ball with one of my teammates at Vets, John Archibald.
College
One night, I was doing a mountainside concert at Cranmore Mt. while working with the new Brandywine singers. Old members were there for "reunion" and the scene was electric with theater lighting, big sound and about 10,000 people.
Well, all of a sudden ... just like being hit by lightening ... I knew it was over.
I matriculated at CCRI around 1979/1980 and subsequently earned Associates Degrees in Computer Science and Accounting concurrently.
Because I was so much older than my fellow students, it was impossible to join any school activities (although I came very close to trying out for the Baseball team). Besides, I had homework up the kazzoo and this was my opportunity to make up for my high school failings.
Workplace
In the IT world, I had made it to the management level. I enjoyed the power and the chance to make decisions regarding large capital commitments. I enjoyed the opportunity to "be in command". BUT, I HATED PLAYING POLITICS. That's not me. To me a Spade is simply a Spade and nothing else ... life's gray area is smaller for me than for most other people.
Well, I just can't find it in me to play the political game. So when the opportunity to leave management and return to programming,I left. Currently I am a senior Programmer/Analyst doing a day's work for a day's pay and staying below the radar.
I am also back in school learning website design for my next career move ... business for myself and a return to the freedom and creativity that was available in the music world.
Working part time and staying fit in the years to come seems like a good way to live my life.
