Margie Mannion's Story

Hello fellow classmates, This year is 50 years since our high school graduation and I thought this would be a good time to reconnect with old friends that I may see at the upcoming reunion. I was quiet and shy in high school, so you may not remember having a conversation with me. I wish I knew back then what I know now about personal relationships and was a friendly to everyone I met. Today, I'm still still introverted in the sense that I am uncomfortable in large crowds and prefer quiet activities like reading and gardening. I retired 10 years ago and moved to Carolina Shores, NC, a small community right on the NC/SC border, about 30 min. drive from Myrtle Beach. Before that I was a library media specialist at East School in Torrington. It was a dream job, but I was laid off due to budget cuts. At first, I was devastated, but since then my husband (Karl Pettersen) and I have traveled quite a bit, something we wouldn't have been able to do if I had continued working. Moving to NC, meant I was starting all over and I resolved to be a better person and push myself to reach out to others in the community. Someone, told me, "no one will be knocking on your door, you need to go out and meet people. This was difficult at first, but I found the people here friendly and welcoming. With hopes of meeting others, I joined a lot of clubs and even started to learn to do a few new things, like golf and tennis. I learned how to play bridge, Mexican Train (dominoes), and Mah Jongg. Soon, I began feeling better about myself and connecting with my neighbors. It helped that I live in a development where...Expand for more
about 75% of the residents are retirees and 95% of them moved here from up north. Many of those here were also new and looking to meet others. I joined a group called "New Friends" and met other recent retirees who were new to the area and looking to meet people. Now I am so very happy to be here. If I had retired in CT I know I wouldn't have started going to the senior center to play bridge!! Life is good right now. I have the most wonderful husband who is caring and kind and amazingly we still enjoy each other's company. My two children live in Raleigh, NC and are close enough to visit often. My daughter, Melissa, married and has two children, Addison (6) and Marshall (4). They are wonderful, loving grandchildren and light up my life with joy. My son, Eric, is engaged and will be getting married in July. So, maybe we'll be fortunate to be blessed with more grandchildren. When I first moved down here, I worked as substitute teacher for the local elementary schools and taught every subject from grades K-8. I also volunteered at the school and helped the school librarian by shelving books. When my granddaughter was born, I needed to shift my priorities and went to Raleigh for 3 days a week (rotating with Karl) so my daughter could return to work after her maternity leave was over. I've also found peace with a renewed interest in religion and spirituality, and try to be more selfless and give back by volunteering my time to visit the sick and elderly in my community. I hope if you are reading this, that you will "friend me" on Facebook. (Marjorie Mannion Pettersen) God bless you, Margie
