Marjorie's Story

I changed my first name to Marya (first syllable like the planet...) in the mid-90's. Long story...partly that the My Little Margie image just didn't do it for me anymore. I always wanted to be a psychologist when I grew up. Weren't girls born in the 50's a little uninformed as to the possibilities that might lie ahead? I sure was. The plan changed to becoming a teacher, though I seemed to maintain that observational, reflective orientation that a psychologist might exhibit. What eventually inspired a long term commitment to the teaching profession was working with children from third world countries in Arlington, VA.(marriage took me there). The world came to me. After that taste, I pursued some graduate work, and other training, developing a skill set and strong passion for multicultural and peace education, self-esteem and stress management. I proceeded to teach with this focus in the public and private sectors. I retired from Arlington Public Schools in 2005 and now have my own consulting business, working with individuals, children, educators and business in stress management, self-esteem and problem solving. I have one daughter, Kelly, age 35, who has been an amazing light in my life. She is about to venture on to VA Tech to get a PhD in Adult Development and Aging. Alas, she will learn what to do with this baby boomer! I teach a YogaRhythmics(yoga-dancing) class every summer at a...Expand for more
traditional arts program called Common Ground on the Hill in Westminster, Md. to the likes of the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha. It takes me back to the Pom Pom days. The difference is, its NOT exclusive...wow, was PP's ever!! Its for all body types and ages!! (That means that when I am an old woman (we're not there yet, are we?...phew!!, I can dance and teach! The wildest thing I ever did at Duval was to write an assigned essay for Mr. Seaton that elaborated on the advantages ;-) and disadvantages of chewing gum in Algebra class. He didn't like the advantage side of it and asked me if I would like to read it to Principal Chase. That man left his heart in San Fransisco or somewhere. Oh, well, he taught me to be a more compassionate and approachable teacher and inspired my mischievous side. One time we plotted to keep him talking about himself the entire class(his ego equaled his knowledge of math). It worked! He never once mentioned math!! I think that Greg Taylor was in on this! I would love to reconnect with anyone from the class of 68'. I had to move in 67' so you won't see me in the senior year book. What a bummer that was!! My loyalty always remained with the Tigers! I miss Jenny D'Onofrio. She was so genuine, and a friend to everyone. I work in Bethesda frequently and always think of her and how she befriended me when I was new on the block and stuck by me after I left DuVal.
