Mark's Story
ON MY 60th birthday i told the story of my summer camp experience in 1963. AT that time, i longed to be a great athlete. HOWEVER, i was not born with the sports gene.THE camp was a day camp and generally pleasant except for one of the star jocks named TOM URBELIS. TOM was a member of AMSTERDAM highs FABULOUS FIVE that won 30 straight games between 1962- 1963. TOM seemed to like to boss younger kids like myself around and as the week drew to a close ,I felt the desire to teach him a lesson. THE last day a group of kids and myself were swimming in galway lake when TOM spotted me with a handful of mud. HE started to scream at me ...Expand for more
and demand i throw the mud back into the lake. AT this point , I felt the need to challenge his authority and refused to comply . TOM started walking toward me SCREAMING louder and louder . FIINALLY, he came right next to me and demanded that I drop the mud . AFTER a second of deliberation, I took the mud and pushed it into his face. IN my young 14 year old life, i cant recall anyone getting so angry at me.LOOKING back after all these years he probably should have punched me inthe face for that incident.IF any classmates ever run into TOM URBELIS , they can relay this story to him. I would be curious to get his reaction.
