Mark "Buzz"'s Story
Life
After graduating from Drake Law School in Des Moines, I started my own law frim with my two best friends from law school. I specialized in employment discrimination, civil rights, and constitutional law. I also taught part-time at both Iowa law schools. In 1994 I was appointed by the President as a U.S.District Court Judge. On Jan.1st, 2000 I became Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. I just love my work and wake up early each morning with much gratitude for the privilege of being able to do public service with a passion for justice. In 2015 I took senior status...Expand for more
on my 65th birthday. This allowed me to reduce my caseload in Iowa and take only the most challenging civil and criminal cases. I also am helping out in the districts of Idaho and North Dakota because their judges are very overworked. I have also been sitting by special designation from the Chief Judge of the U.S. Supreme Court to sit on the Ninth Circuit court of Appeals, usually in San Fran and Pasadena. I love to travel and just got back from a trip to Scotland, England and Ireland and will be spending Christmas in Iceland. Love to play pickelball and bridge and make hot sauces!!!! Also fun making cocktails.
