Mark's Story

Since we all graduated almost 35 years ago, I'm sure we've all seen a lot of things. I don't really consider myself special from that perspective, but here is my story. After graduation, I attended CMU and graduated with a degree in Recreation Therapy. I married Laurie Wallis, who I dated all through High School and College, in 1978. We had our first child, Nathan in 1985 and our second son Derek in 1987. I worked in various Psych and Substance Abuse facilities until 1998, when I became a Youth Pastor in Sterling Heights. Laurie has taught at Mott for over 20 years now, and was at Pierce before that. We brought our kids up to love camping, and in 2004, we took a trip out west. On the way back, I got really sick and ended up in the hospital in St. Louis, MO for almost 2 weeks. After I got home, I started seeing a doc more regularly. In 2007, I almost died, and I can still hear my doc tell me, "To save your life, I have to transfer you to Henry Ford or U of M. Then Laurie and the boys came in and kind of said their good byes, which was really weird. The last thing I remember is Laurie saying to me, "Promise me you'll fight." I kind of laughed and told her I would. I didn't wake up for 2 days, and I was hooked up to all kinds of machines. It was a crazy time. I remember the surgeon coming in and saying, "You aren't healthy enough to give a liver to right now, you need to lose some weight." This was after they put fluid into me and jacked me up to 440 pounds. They put me on Dialysis, and were taking about 10 pounds off each night, but sent me home with no transplant. I tried to lose weight, ...Expand for more
and was a little successful with it, but could not get under 300 pounds. My Dr., fought to get me on the Transplant List, and in March of 2008, I was placed on the list. Laurie and I coach the Freshman Girl's Softball Team at Mott, and this year our son helped us. We were playing Northville, away on May 19, 2009 when my son got a call from my brother that I needed to call U of M within an hour. When I called, the voice on the other end, said, "Mr. Collard, we have a liver for you." At that point, I froze, I said, "Can I talk it over with my wife?" They said "Yes, you have 20 minutes to decide." I explained that we were in the middle of a game, but she didn't seem to care too much. I called 6 different people, trying to get someone to say, "don't do it." But, everyone was so happy for me. So I called them back and asked when I needed to come in, and they said, "Right now." So we left the game, and went to the hospital. On May 20, 2009, I got a new lease on life. I didn't realize how sick I was, but my surgeon told me that if I would have waited, I would have been in the hospital within 2 months, without a donor, and may have died. As it turns out, I just passed my 5th month with my new liver, and I feel great. For the first time in about 15 years, I'm under 300 pounds, and trying to get in shape. So, although it was a tough few years, I am so thankful for the opportunity to go through it and now am looking forward to the retirement years with great anticipation. Well, that's my life in a nutshell. It really is fun to re-connect with people from the past, and I hope you are doing well, too.
