Mark's Story

Life For my Great Mills HS buddies: I didn't actually graduate from GMHS--my senior year found me at Virginia Beach. A lot of you know what kind of scene that is; they were a good bunch but it's you guys I remember. After thinking about attending U of Va or William and Mary, I went to the West Coast because one of you sent me a clipping about a dreamy place called UC Santa Cruz. Scene: Mark walks up to circle of trailers (they didn't finish the dorms) where fellows in T-shirts and jeans are working on old Austin Healeys. They eye my madras shirt, slacks, loafers: "You must be the one from the East Coast." Turns out I was the only one. Haven't worn a tie since. I didn't quite become a hippie but I did cruise the Haight on my Suzuki in the Summer of Love. Still love the West coast. After goofing around for a few years my partner and I, Linda Shank, got some mystery novels published. Which got us a call from a new show called Murder, She Wrote. Did a few of those as well as some other shows, produced a PBS pilot, optioned some movie scripts, and am now in the throes of making a feature film. It's fun, it's about as predictable as river boat gambling. On the way I got a Master's degree headed for a PhD when I injured my spine. That has slowed me a bit...Expand for more
, but I get around. Many fond memories of you all--mostly the girls. Sadly, by the time I arrived you all seemed to have boyfriends. At least, that's what I told myself. I do remember lounging about in the bus going to track meets and hanging with Bev, Marsha, maybe Carolyn? To remind you, I was the guy with glasses and a rather sarcastic edge, which I have yet to loose. Today, I am without children (but I like them) living on an island (Vashon) in Puget Sound. My neighbor is an indicted billionaire. I'm not. Since I'm also on the website at Universal Studios, a few short words to my compatriots in The Biz. Writers have a pretty short work life. But I still get those residuals; thank you Black Rock. Life goes on, kids, even when the hair goes grey. Hang in there. Workplace I wrote for tv (Murder,She Wrote; Magnum; Simon & Simon, etc.) as well as movies--many optioned, none made. At present have a new movie script and hope to produce it myself. As backup, I got a master's degree in American History and was entered in a PhD. program (UC Davis) when I suffered a spinal injury. That has limited me to more of a freelance life these days. I walk, I talk, I just do less of it. Oh, also had some mystery novels published. I guess I'm a writer. . .
