on to study clarinet and composition at Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois, Columbia University and Conservatory of Amsterdam (under Chinary Ung, Ben Johnston and Mario Davidovsky).
Recently Mark's attention has turned to music for improvisation interacting with electroacoustic music. In 2012 Gustavson was commissioned by Stony Brook University for their "Premieres Concert" and composed "Turning," a mixed chamber ensemble piece. Other recent works of note are "The Fisherman Songs," a 40-minute song cycle for bass/baritone and piano.
Reviewing Gustavson's 2013 album of chamber music "Dissolving Images" on Albany Records, Frank J. Oteri wrote, "Hearing these five works collectively reveals a unified compositional aesthetic, one which seamlessly blends heady structural rigor with emotional intensity and humor."
