Mark's Story

So here's where the people in my memory reside. Hi there! I hope you are all well, prosperous and happy. I went to college majoring in Music. Took a break for a semester and worked in the woods cutting brush con Mexicanos de Guadalajara Y Durango. Worked as a department store Santa. Finished college and worked in a gas station. Played in a soul & salsa band called Eco in Tijuana and at the Navy bases. Fell in love with a cello-playing Classics major, married, assisted at the birth of a daughter. Went back to school, earned a teaching credential. Substitute taught, Moved to a the Sierras and cut and split firewood, pulled wire, rolled pizza dough and found my first career, Night Auditor/Front Desk at a resort hotel. Revived credential (1985), taught music, led amateur orchestras & choirs (Handel's Messiah every December for a decade!), second daughter born, hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, car-camping up and down west ...Expand for more
coast. (Favorite spot: Cape Lookout on the ocean west of Tillamook.) Taught K-12 general music, choir, band at a little tiny school district (1994-2001) Master of Science in Music. Third daughter born. Recruited to a stunningly endowed high school to teach choir, orchestra & assist with the band. Wonderfully supportive school, community, though a bit hot in the summertime. Sang w/ my students onstage at Carnegie Hall 2003 & 2008 (and they only charged us a grand each for the privilege). My wife earned teaching credential last year, teaches at the MS that feeds my HS. Married 30 years this coming Dec. First daughter earned MA in musicology, and married last year. 2nd daughter earned BFA last year. We believe in the transformative power of education. Ben Franklin: empty your purse into your head. 3rd daughter in the 7th grade, plays concert mistress of the MS orchestra. She also dances on point. Life continues to fascinate.
