Mark's Story

Life: Yes I have a twin! I moved to Virginia from Walnut, California in October of 1976. I had lived there for several years and attended Walnut High School. I really hated leaving Walnut. I had moved from city to city, town to town many times previously due to my parent¿s jobs. My parents made me get a hair cut when I moved to the east coast because "they are very conservative here". What Ever! Ricky Moe; I still owe you $50.00 where are you? Cathy Brockett where and how are you? I enjoyed Chantilly greatly but missed Walnut a lot! I made a lot of friends at Chantilly but never kept in touch with any of them. Kevin DuPont (we will have to chat sometime) I saw you at the reunion but what ever happened to Jackie Abrams? This has been the story of my life moving around the country every few years, or just being too busy with work and or family responsibilities. I left Chantilly in the middle of my senior year to enter the military. I was then a frustrated teenager who wanted more then I counted on getting. I enjoyed the military especially basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC (I will never forget you Drill Sgt. Tennison) and then AIT at Ft. Sam. I was not so happy after I got my permanent duty assignment with the 76th Combat Heavy Engineering Battalion at Ft. George G. Meade, MD. I believe I expected something entirely different! I had volunteered as a Fire Fighter before leaving school and again volunteered as a Fire Fighter / Emergency Medical Technician while stationed at Ft. Meade. My primary duties in the military were as a Medic with a secondary MOS as Fire Fighter. After leaving the Military I had several JOBS mostly in restaurants. I maintained my passion as a FF/EMT volunteering until I became a full time employee of the DC Fire and EMS Department in 1988. I was married briefly to Stephanie L. Carver (class of 1981) who gave to me a son; Jason. He Graduated from High School in 2004 that is all I want to say about that. I spend as much time as I can travel, hiking, etc... to get away from my job. Don't get me wrong I LOVE what I do as a Paramedic/Supervisor but need to do other things outside of the Fire Department to maintain my sanity. I was married again in 2003 to Miriam V. Herrera whom I meet at The George Washington University Hospital's Emergency Room some years ago and have maintained a great relationship since. She is an RN there and has direct knowledge of what I have to go through to do my job which is great for me as well as her. My wife and I have 2 beautiful...Expand for more
daughters now; Kira 2 1/2 and Kyleigh 5 months which have taken a bit of getting uses too, my Son turned 23 years old July 2008. My daughter's are a miracle to me and the best part of my life. My wife and I bought a big house in Bristow, VA in 2004 and have a beautiful 5 year old, half Rottweiler/half Sheppard, 130 pound dog we adopted from the counties shelter. That whole 2.3 kids, dog in the yard thing has hit home, but I am not complaining. I am still not growing up, taking care of responsibilities as they come. I golf when I can. I have spent a great deal of time and money learning precision shooting; pistol and rifle, hobbies that may come in handy when my daughter's gets older ;-). Some of the best times of my life where living in Walnut, attending Walnut High School and then Greenbrier, attending school at Chantilly Secondary (High) School. My name in school was Henry (my step father¿s last name) I changed it back to Baker after leaving school in 1979. I have a lot left to do in this life so for now that¿s all folks. Workplace I began my career in Fire and EMS while still a student at Chantilly Secondary School. Chantilly was a Secondary School in the 70's and early 80's. I volunteered for Fairfax County as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician at the then Navy Vale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Station just off of West Ox Road in Herndon. It's no longer there. The replacement for that station was built in the early 1980's and is now the Fox mill Station on Route 50. I joined the Army after leaving High School in mid year (1979) call me stupid, I was. I hated the military so I got out in December of 1980. The Military has improved 10 fold since then. I had several jobs to support my habit of volunteering until I joined the D.C. Fire and EMS Department in January of 1988. I became an EMT/Paramedic a few years after joining the department which is my current position now as well as being a Battalion EMS Supervisor. I love what I do, but I am really starting to hate the people I work for. Politics¿ just does not quite describe the problems the city has. I am currently looking for a job in the same field but somewhere, where state of the art and standard of care actually mean something. I have not grown up yet and as long as I still have my health I don't plan on growing up anytime soon. Responsibilities are one thing but grow up never! I love the high risk stuff I get involved in, just call me an adrenalin junkie. When I can not do it anymore I will write a book
