For over fifteen years, Mark Inman has come to be the voice in the specialty coffee industry for issues concerning sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, green entrepreneurship and social justice. His tireless campaign to improve environmental and social conditions in the coffee industry, as well as voicing his support for the small farmer movement has taken him from local classrooms in the United States to remote coffee laboratories in the hills of Esteli, Nicaragua and from Washington D.C. to the floor of the United Nations.
InmanÂs own company, Taylor Maid Farms, LLC has been considered a Âworking experiment to test the boundaries of the sustainable business model and he has kept an ongoing Âopen door policy, for those interested in learning from his trials and tribulations. Taylor Maid Farms is a 100% certified organic, shade-grown and fair-trade coffee roaster, based in Sebastopol, California. Taylor Maid Farms sustainable practices include: packaging its products in recyclable steel packaging, delivering it goods in bio-diesel powered vehicles, recycling its waste at its on-site worm farm and roasting coffee on their patented Âlow emission roasters. InmanÂs efforts have been covered in local and nationwide publications as well as television broadcasts including: TIME magazine, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and the San Francisco Chronicle.
In addition to his work at Taylor Maid Farms, Inman currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). He is the chair of the SCAAÂs, Sustainability Committee, writes an ongoing column titled, ÂThe Green Café for Fresh Cup- the coffee industryÂs largest trade publication, and is the co-founder of The Good Seed Company- a social and environmental think tank based in Sebastopol, California.
