Mark's Story
Life
After TPHS I went to SDSU and went into engineering. and worked around north county until 1989. I got married (#1) in 1982 and divorced (no kids) in 1986. In 1989 I got married again (#2) and moved to Washington DC, and then lived in Germany from 1990- 1993 in Dusseldorf building the worlds first digital wireless GSM network. I moved back to San Diego in 1994, got divorced, again (this time with two wonderful daughters) and have been here ever since. I got married again in 1997 and have been living with my wife and four daughters (well, my older two are with my ex 50% of the time) in Carmel Valley a short distance from old TPHS ever since.
I worked at various companies in the wireless industry over the years. QUALCOMM brought me back from Germany to the US. I was fortunate to be the founding CTO of Cricket Wireless when it spun out of QC. At Cricket I had the honor of testifying in bot the US House of Representatives and US Senate. I was the GM of NextWave wireless in San Diego, until I had to lay off 500 people and help shut it down.
I fulfilled a dream of starting my own company, OpenRAN, but that, well, failed - unless it comes back to...Expand for more
life. I've been working for Facebook in the wireless connectivity group since Oct 2016. I still own a home in Del Mar and commute to an appt. in Menlo Park weekly.
if you knew me at TPHS you knew I was in to bicycle racing and running back then. I took a break for about 20 years and got back into both, and now swimming, and do ironman triathlons now. I still do my running intervals up at TPHS when I can sneak onto THE TRACK/FIELD WE NEVER HAD (no real bitterness, I'm thrilled that today's students have so much more). I ran into our old track coach, Jim Temples, at the San Dieguito Half Marathon a few years ago...he's still a fast runner!
I've kept in touch with many close friends from TPHS over the years and am impressed that most of them have moved to: Texas, Japan, Russia, New Guinea..all over the world. Having said that, it's still fun to run into people around Del Mar, Zels, running on the beach and other local places.
I've enjoyed being a dad tremendously. One married daughter nearly 30 working as a counselor, one working as a chef, one (a TPHS graduate too!) studying engineering at CalPoly, the youngest - still at home - attending CCA.
