Mark's Story
After graduation, Bill Forrest, Randy Hardy and myself joined the US Navy under the buddy system program. We went to NTC Orlando for boot camp and from there we went to NATTC Memphis for schooling. Randy and Bill were assigned a different school than I was. After graduation, Bill and Randy went to the USS Midway stationed in Japan and I went to NAS Miramar (San Diego, CA). We never crossed paths again while we were in the military. I remained at NAS Miramar working on the F-4 phantom aircraft for approximately 10 years. I was assigned to VF-121, VF-191 and VF-21. During this time, I was nominated for the Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year twice, Sailor of the year for VF-21 twice and selected as an alternate on the All Navy Slow Pitch softball team.
I was then selected as the first Navy enlisted to be assigned to a secret Air Force squadron (4477TES) at Nellis AFB, NV in 1982. This was my most rewarding experience during my military career. The program has since been declassified (2007) so I can tell you a little bit about it. 99% of the time, we were at a secret air base in Tonopah, NV. We operated Russian made aircraft (MIG 17, MIG 21 and MIG23) in a ¿real life environment¿ against Air Force, Navy and Marine pilots. We were sworn to secrecy due to the Cold War was still going on. The training we were able to give our nations pilots was remark...Expand for more
able to say the least. I was awarded numerous medals there including the Air Force Commendation Medal. What a wonderful bunch of folks. I got married the first time.
I was then ordered to NAS Cecil Field, FL (Jacksonville) in May of 1985 to VFA-137 (A new squadron of the Navy¿s newest aircraft the F/A-18 Hornet). My son, Mark II was born in 1987. I then transferred across town to NAS Jacksonville to HS-1 (helicopter squadron). I was divorced and then remarried in 1989. I lost my farther during this tour also. I returned to NAS Cecil Field to start up a new reconnaissance squadron of ES-3A aircraft. I remained there until I retired in December of 1995. During this time frame, I was awarded the Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals.
My wife (Shirl) and I moved to Athens, GA. I was employed by Louisiana Pacific Corporation as a millwright at an OSB strand board facility. We moved to Commerce, GA (about 20 miles north of Athens). I progressed up to the position of maintenance planner. I remained there until 2008 as the facility was closing down. I worked at a local contractor business for approximately 6 months until they laid off most of the staff due to the economy. My son returned from Iraq recently and was married in June. He¿s a specialist in the US Army.
I don¿t know where life will take me but I can¿t wait for the ride!!!!!
