Mark's Story
Life
Update, Oct 2014: Alive and well in CR. Single; co-habit with a Golden Retriever.
2 kids, son 32, (a funeral director) daughter 31, (a jewler) both in Chicagoland. No grandkids at this date.
School
Some may remember me as one of the Science Center kids (geeks?) where I worked most mornings before school and did a lot of presentations to younger kids at other schools with animals, geology & chemistry shows; related, you might have bumped into me at Hawkeye Seed, where I ran the pet department for most of HS and some of college. I was also one of the co-editors of the Plain Brown Wrapper, and a contributing writer. Some may remember that I was a terrible singer, a mediocre dancer but a damn fine promoter for the summer stock Music Man '75 and sometimes hung with the drama-artsy bunch. I doubt anybody remembers that I was on the track team, where my spikes ran more races than I did. I was a card carrying member of IDGS 75. I liked to do outdoor stuff with a bunch of guys and sometimes hung out with the Enright jazz ensemble when they jammed, but they wouldn't ever let me play (good reason). nd be sort of like everybody in my downtime. If I didn't know you, I probably knew somebody who did and maybe just ran out of time to know you directly, but I hope all are well today.
College
So that we're honest here, I didn't complete at IA State, but I had to fill in a graduation year for the $#%& database. Actually, I was in and out of school and owned a petshop called FishMan's Aquariums for several years, then went from there into retail management school in VA after I sold the biz.
Workplace
After a stint in major retailing, I discovered the microcomputer and ended up managing both a large Apple dealership and farm / small business software development house in Ames, as well as writing about PC use for various niche market magazines. That led eventually to K-12 learning technology, where I worked for about 20 years, then to adult educational technologies for about the last 5 years.
As of Oct 2014: Absent from web-tech world for several years while I cared for and end-of-life'd both parents. Restarted as Business Development Manager for Dialogs Apps (See more at Dialogs dot com). Also produce tropical fish on a small commercial scale and have started farmer's market projects.
