Mark's Story

After high school I lived in the Ocean Park/Santa Monica area for about 4-5 years. I sold Mitsubishi¿s and later Volvo¿s. I attended LACC, SMCC, and San Francisco State. I was not a good student, so I did not graduate at that time. I married (Tina) in 86, had a daughter (Christina) in 87, and moved to Oahu, Hawaii in 89. We lived there for 15 years, 2 years in Honolulu and 12 years in Kapolei. For play I loved to body board and occasionally I golfed (I never shot below a 100). For fun, Tina and I walked a lot, saw movies, dined, and snorkeled. In Hawaii I sold Honda¿s for about 5 years then decided to return to school. I earned an AA from Leeward Community College, a BA from the University of Hawaii, West Oahu, and a Masters and Doctorate (2002) in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University. In Hawaii I worked primarily with adolescents with behavioral disruptive disorders, adults with substance abuse related challenges who were usually involved in the criminal justice system, and adults with severe and persistent mental illness who also had substance abuse related challenges. mpleted my post-doc work we moved to Albuquerque, NM. We have been here for about 4 years. I¿m currently a Clinical Psychologist at the Pueblo of San Felipe working with Tribal members, mostly who have alcohol problems. I¿m also running my own program. I started it approximately 3 years ago. It is now a 39 bed Therapeutic Community for men with Substance Abuse related problems; many of them have a history of homelessness, unemployment, mental illness, and criminal justice system involvement. Shortly, I¿ll likely leave the rez and just focus on my business. God, I really miss body boarding and snorkeling. Now, for fun, we travel, see movies, and dine-out. Since I¿ve been in NM I began collecting Native American artwork. I particularly like collecting Native American pottery. It has been awesome working and living in two different culturally rich cities. Unfortunately, there¿s no snorkeling, body boarding, or Hawaiian food in Albuquerque. Instead I have been eating a lot of Pueblo Indian and New Mexican food. I guess I¿ll have to trade my fins in for skis. I missed the 20 year reunion, but I¿m looking forward to the 30 year reunion.
