Mark's Story
Note: my marriage partner Larry Bauer died on June 15, 2023. We were together for over 34 years.
After graduating from Hale and bombing my first year of college, I worked for over a decade training adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities in Oklahoma, Iowa, Florida, and Texas. During that time, I earned an associate's degree in media communication that led to my working in technical support and quality assurance for a morally bankrupt and marginally competent business processes outsourcer whose name rhymed with Scream. I also, in 1984, quit drinking and using drugs, although I can't claim that I gained some sanity as a result of that until much later.
In 2000, my job moved me from Fort Worth, TX, where my partner Larry and I had lived for many years, to Silver City, NM. I heard about the September 11 attacks as I was driving in to work from the mountain village where I lived to the call center in town. One of our center's contracts required representatives to troubleshoot internet devices connected to televisions (remember WebTV?), so I spent that day watching a sea of 80 small televisions all showing the same images of the World Trade Center burning and collapsing.

was, that shock did force me to look at what I was doing and what I wanted to do. Nearly a year later, I walked off that terrible job and enrolled at Western New Mexico University to finish earning my B.A. in History in 2004. I applied to graduate school and was offered a fellowship at the University of Missouri, where I earned a Ph.D. in medieval history in 2012. After a couple of years adjuncting and as a visiting professor, I joined the faculty at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota, where I am now an associate professor of history (and won the MiSU Board of Curators Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2020–2021).
My spouse Larry Bauer and I were together from April 1, 1989 (and legally married in Iowa in March of 2011) until his death on June 15, 2023. He was a former carpenter and bicycle racer who in retirement worked as an artists' model and in facilities here at MiSU. He also was a motorcyclist, with his last bike being a BMW R Nine T. My own attempt to ride foundered on bad eyesight and general awkwardness, but there is a picture of me and my bike in the photos nonetheless. We lived and I still live in Minot with two cats (down from a high of seven at one point) and one dog in a 1928 stucco cottage a little north of downtown.
