Mark's Story
Life
I have 4 sons: they are ages 30, 27, 21, and 12y old. Their mother and I had 35 nice years together, but unfortunately divorced this year. I like to spend time fishing for trout, kokanee salmon, black bass and stripers. I have a small boat that I go fishing with. I like playing the electric bass guitar and ballroom dancing. I was playing a lot of softball, but my last team recently folded. I thought that I might be too old to find a new team, but I've been managing to find teams to play with. Kinda weird since I was not a very impressive baseball player when I was young. I'm also starting to play a pretty lot of tennis.
School
Fremont HS was really fun. I've never had so many friends before or since. My recollection is that we were pretty wild, totally irresponsibl...Expand for more
e, without thought of future or of consequences. A pretty great time!
College
I was in school forever. After Fremont HS, I went to Stanford U for BS and Master's degrees in Biology. I then went to Yale U in New Haven, CT for a PhD in Biology. I went to Pasadena, CA to do postdoctoral research in Biology at Caltech. Throughout, I tried to keep up with the irresponsibility lessons I learned at Fremont HS.
Workplace
I became an Assistant Professor in Biology at Caltech in 1984. I didn't get tenure at Caltech and took a position as tenured Full Professor at UC Berkeley in 1990. I've been a Biology professor at Berkeley since then. I guess I am teaching the best and brightest students in California. I find it kind of hard to believe since I wasn't so studious in high school.
