Mark's Story

Mark Ulano has been recording sound for film professionally since 1976. He has worked on 147 film and television projects serving the cream of the film directing community: James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Stephen Frears, Jon Favreau, Adam McKay, Silvester Stallone, Jay Roach and many others. He is well known for his 27 year collaboration with Quentin Tarantino. His credits include ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (Oscar NOM), AD ASTRA (Oscar NOM), KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (Oscar NOM), THE MASTER, ROCKY BALBOA, KILL BILL 1&2, IRON MAN I & II, SUPER 8, BLUE CRUSH, , THE MAJESTIC, SPY KIDS, STUART LITTLE, AUSTIN POWERS, JACKIE BROWN, DESPERADO, THE BIG EASY and many others. His capture of performances of many of the iconic actors in cinema include, Robert Deniro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. und mixing as well as the Cinema Audio Society and Motion Picture Sound Editors awards for the same and was nominated for the British Academy Award along with 27 other significant industry awards and nominations.. Mark served 5 Terms as President of IATSE Local 695 (the film sound union), and 2 terms as President of the CAS and is on the executive committee of the Academy Sound Branch 8 terms. Mark has directed 15 documentary film projects including his most recent project I LOVE WHAT I DO: A DRUMMER'S LIFE , a feature length piece about his father, noted jazz musician and educator Sam Ulano. Mark was also trained as a percussionist, is fluent in American Sign Language and collects antique phonographs and early film and sound books and literature. He lives in Umbria Italy and Los Angeles with his equally accomplished Partner/wife Patrushkha Mierzwa, noted author and pioneer sound artist/boom operator in collaboration with Mark on over 90 film and television projects herself. Together they teach workshops and lecture internationally across Asia and Europe. Mark has written over 50 articles on about the art of telling stories with sound for cinema and is currently writing a book on mentoring. Mark and Patrushkha's daughter, Molly Ulano serves in the US Air Force and son, Max Ulano, serves the Glendale, CA school system.
