Mark's Story

I retired from the Marine Corps on October 2004 right here in our nation's capital and decided to put down some semi-permanent roots for a change. My wife and children had been hazed with frequent moves and no chance to settle into a community for long enough. I went right to work after retirement in a great paying job with even crappier hours than what I left. After three years I needed a change and came back to the government (kind of). I work for General Dynamics as an senior analyst working for the U.S. Department of State. I manage a portion of our international business affairs with Switzerland and really like it. It sounds high tech, but I promise it really isn't. I work with a great group of people, the work is rewarding and the schedule is great. That's importatnt because it allows me lots more time to finish spoiling my youngest child and official princess of the house - Lily. Lily is 7 now and was the "what do you mean your pregnant" baby. I've done my best to spoil her rotten and by all measures I think I'm on track. She is quite a character, loves school (she definitely didn't get that from me) and loves her pets. She even wants a snake, but I think I'll try to keep saying no to that one.... Alaina is 21 and our oldest child. She is in her senior year at Virginia Commonwealth University and is beautiful and very athletic. Thankfully her Field Hockey skills helped pick up a large portion of her education. She is very independent and is even talking about joining the military after graduating. She's majoring in education but has already started to wonder if that's her real calling. So much for that degree... Dominic is 18 and is the son my mother wis...Expand for more
hed on me. He's a mini-Mark right down to the bad grades, big smile and mischievious ways. He's been a major pain in the rear end and has caused me more sleepless nights than I can count, but I wouldn't trade him for anything. Once he figures out that life isn't a free ride there will be great things in store for him. I've got all of my fingers and all ten toes crossed on that one. Jacob is 14, and is one of the smallest freshman in school (just like I was). Never the less, he started at corner back for his high school football team this year and is an awesome athlete. I just hope his body catches up with the size of his heart pretty soon so he can be more competetive and really enjoy the thrill of sports. He is a National Junior Honor Society member, has a heart of gold and cherishes everything about his little sister Lily. He loves the Bucs (like Dad), the Yankees (like Grand Pa) and Penn State where he intends to follow in the long line of great linebackers. The lucky mother of my tribe is my wife Lori. She was a Marine too (that's where I met her) and I think that's the only way she was able to stay sane. She really understood the lifestyle she was signing up for. She put her life on hold to watch over and raise our family while I tracked all over the globe and for that I am forever grateful. Thanks hardly seems like enough... She has only been able to start working on a career these past couple of years but has it going strong and seems to really like having a life outside of the house. That's a quick recap of me and mine. Feel free to shoot me a line at mark.vernetti(at)gdit(dot)com especially if you're going to be in the D.C. area. Take care. Mark out...
