Mark's Story

Life After working a series of mindless jobs in and around Clayton County, I decided that I needed an education lest I'd be trapped there my whole life. I worked for Cotter and Company, Winn Express and Clayton General Hospital, among others. So, I enrolled at West Georgia in 1988, and eventually earned a BS in Criminal Justice. When I graduated, I got a job as a bill collector. I hated every single minute of it. So I quit that, got hired on at UPS as a loader and went back to WGC for my Master's degree. I never got that degree. I quit school after finishing all the course work and with a 3.9 average. Buy me a drink somewhere and I'll tell you that story. I had a good time in grad school, majoring mostly in beer and girls. During summer break I spent 3 months in Europe, living off savings, doing nothing, traveling, getting my first tattoo. During my final year at grad school, my Danish girlfriend came and we ran off to Vegas and got hitched at The Graceland Wedding Chapel. With no plans for the future and a wife in Europe, I sold or gave away nearly everything I owned, bought a one-way ticket and moved to Copenhagen. I spent five years or so there, living the expatriate life of penury with my bride and our dogs, being a dishwasher, short order cook, bouncer, and "cellar master." On my off days, I'd ride around Copenhagen on my bike and just hang out. I fancied myself some sort of latter day Henry Miller. Ah, delusions. I'd take five-week long vacations to go fishing in the North Sea. I'd sit around and try to play blues on my guitar. I'd try to learn to do bunny-hops on my new BMX bike. I traveled a bit. I've been to England, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Mexico and Canada. In 1999, I flew into Seattle and rented a car and drove it across the country. l lived on Fleming Road. Once there, I got what stuff I had left, and drove back across to Boise, Idaho. A college professor had said it was a booming place and was a nice place to live. She was right on one account. I got here and couldn't find a job. Savings were running out, a wife, two dogs and a cat were en route, so I took an $8 an hour job in a wine warehouse. All that substandard education and it's experience running wine cellars in Denmark that land me work! I lived in a converted 7-11. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, though it wasn't all that nice either. I was promoted to purchasing agent. I spent millions buying wine and beer. Hated every minute of it. I quit that July 13th, 2001. I had LASIK, so no more glasses. On 9/11 I was in the basement of the Parker Center in LA applying for the LAPD. I got hired and they told it would be two years before I would start the academy. Well, not one to wait that long, I e-mailed Paul Garland, then a sergeant with the Clayton County Police. He put in the word, and I got hired on. He promptly quit and went to work for the DA's office. I worked at CCPD for 2 years and change, but I was missing the light and space of Idaho. That and we had some psycho-white trash wench move in next door. She made our life "difficult." She threatened to poison our dogs. She'd yell and scream for no reason, at all hours. We moved back to Boise in April of 2004. Jim Morrison said "The west is the best." He wasn't wrong. This is where they'll bury me. I have 9 pairs of sunglasses, 7 dogs, 5 guitars, 4 cars, 3 cats, 2 rats, 3 bicycles, 0 kids and about 17 pairs of running shoes. I looked through the list and I don't remember a lot of you. I never really liked high school, but I'd be interested in seeing some of the people. Probably not enough to come to a reunion, but still...
