Mark's Story
First off, feel free to email me at "markorwoll at gmail dot com". (I have to spell it out like that because Classmates doesn't allow you to give web sites or email addresses, apparently.)
I've been in newspapers and magazines since graduating from San Diego State with a B.A. in Journalism. Later, I got a master's degree from San Francisco State. When I retired in 2016, I was the International Executive Editor of the Time Inc. International Licensing department in New York. In that role, I oversaw the editorial teams of 21 editions of Travel + Leisure, Departures, and Food & Wine around the world. At the same time, I was the managing editor and, later, International Editor of Travel + Leisure, where I was on the staff for 30 years as an editor and writer. Today I'm an active freelance travel writer, and am often on the road to write for such outlets as Travel Channel, Frommer's Travel, AARP, United Airline's inflight magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, and many others.
You may have seen me on TV. For 20 years, before I retired, I was a frequent talking head on the topic of travel. ...Expand for more
I've been on most of the major morning shows (I even traveled with the Today Show to Greece, France, and Las Vegas) as well as various programs on CBS, ABC, CNBC, CNN, and Fox.
I'm also the author of two books, the most recent one being "John Wayne Speaks" (St. Martin's Griffin, Nov. 2021).
I'm married (to the same beautiful woman since 1983) with three great kids, and have a wonderful money-pit of an old Victorian house in Westchester County, New York. If you visit, please bring hammers, nails, and paint brushes.
Music is a big part of my life. I play mandolin with friends and electric guitar in a rock band (mostly on Sunday afternoons in my home studio), and I help stage-manage the Pleasantville Music Festival every year
My four years at Neff were among the best of my life. Some of my best friends in those years were Nick Smith, Gary Jaycox, Billy Hinson, Dick Geoffroy, Steve Titmus, Rick Jones, Dave Voss (RIP), Mike West, Scott Baker, and so many others. And I was in love with every girl in the Class of '72! I remember them well and fondly. I'll bet I remember you, too!
