Marlayne Harris:

CLASS OF 1967
York, PA

Marlayne's Story

After graduation, moved to Washington, DC where I began working on July 7, 1967 for the Department of Labor. In 1968 left the Department of Labor and began working for the U.S. Coast Guard. Attended one year at Northern Virginia Community College. Married in January 1973 and had two children, Lance and Danielle. Went to work for U.S Customs Service in 1987. Separated from husband in 1990 and dIvorced in 1993. Remarried a Coast Guard Officer in October 1995. Retired from Customs and Border Protection as a Management and Program Analyst on July 3, 2009 with almost 42 years of government service. I have met many interesting people and some VIP. Worked for Ray Kelly who is now the Police Commissioner in New York City. Met a few of our former Presidents and attended dinners and cocktail parties with a high government officials and congressional staff. My decision to leave York and work in Washington, DC has been very rewarding to me and I have enjoyed my life here. When I first came to Washington, I lived in a dormitory for 3 months until I was able to afford an apartment. I lived in DC for 4 years before I moved to Alexandria, VA. I frequented Georgetown for the nightlife. I currently reside in Stafford, VA with my husband. Both my children live within a mile from me. My daughter graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Criminal Justice. She is now a Customs and Border Protection Officer at CBP Headquarters and we worked together for a year before I retired. My son works for his Uncle and at some point will take over the business. I have a 20 yr old granddaughter and a 16 yr old grandson (...Expand for more
my son's children) and a 5 yr old grandson (my daughter's child). On December 20, 2011, I became a great grandmother to a sweet little boy. Since I retired, I care for my grandson 3 days a week, unless I am traveling or sailing, etc. My grandson is ow in school but i still care cor him before and after school. We have a timeshare in Aruba and a 40 ft. Sailboat around Annapolis, Maryland. We do a lot of sailing and in 2011 made it up to Block Island and back. That is a story in itself as we had to deal with two hurricanes (Irene and Lee). We sailed through New York City on September 11(also my son's birthday). We made it home in one piece after dodging debris in the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay. Recently, went to St. Kitts, Cabo San Lucas, and St. thomas and in October headed to Hawaii for 2 weeks with a few days in San Francisco. Have travelled out of the country many times (Paris, St. Emillion, and Bordeaux, France; Madrid, Marbella and Mallorca, Spain; London, England; Rome, Florence, Milan, Pisa, etc., and the Carribean. We enjoy travel and most of the time two of our dear friends go with us. We are going to Cancun in May 2013, a week after my daughter's wedding. I also spend a lot of tiime with my children and their families, especially since they live a stone's throw away. I am in pretty good health so far. An ache here and there and on cholesterol meds. I belong to the gym and have a small workout room in my home, so there are no excuses. I am happy and have a good life. l hope to have many more good years and wish the best to my fellow classmates of year 1967. Drop me a line sometime.
