Marlin's Story
After graduating from AHS (the very next day!) I moved to Ellsworth AFB, So. Dak. with my family. Dad had been transferred there in March of '62 and the rest of us stayed so I could graduate with my class. My parents were the best!
I married an Air Force man and had four children. We divorced after 17 years. In the meantime, we had moved often; Missouri, Colorado, California, Taiwan, New Mexico and finally back to Cali - Travis AFB. I worked for Solano County Veterans Service Office and then Drug and Alcohol Services for a total of about 7 years. Then my now-ex became an insurance broker and I was an agent for a while. Didn't like it much so when he decided he wanted to open a gun shop, I ran that. We ended up with three of them all together (Vacaville, Fairfield and Napa).
After the divorce, I tried a few different things - sold solar water heaters(much more fun than I would have thought), was a locksmith for a while(like it, but there just wasn't enough money and no benefits) and finally decided on corrections. k as extra help. I loved my job and the people I was privileged to work with. I am still close to many of them and see them when I can.
Remember those four kids? Well, among the four I ended up with eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. And a few kids who call me Gram even though we're not related by blood, only by love.
Since my retirement I've taken a road trip to Canada with friends, taken several trips with one grandchild or another, spent time with friends that I didn't get to see much while working, spent more time with my family and just returned from a cross-country trip visiting friends and relatives along the way. I had to cut my trip short so now I will have to go again (Darn! That's terrible!) and see all the places I missed the first time around.
I've been very fortunate to be able to do some traveling even before my retirement with friends and/or family. I've gone to England, Scotland, France, Italy and Germany. There are lots of other places I want to see yet.
Those of you who knew me in school will remember that I hung out with Carole Yost and Pat Carlton. I still do. Those are two of my friends that I have gone on trips with over the years.
