Marshall's Story

Life Married to Karen in 1974. We have two daughters and four grandchildren. January 2023 update. My younger daughter was married in TX on Dec. 3 and made it into a wonderful three-day party. In December my eldest grandson turned 16 and got his driver’s license so I’m waiting to see how long it is before his family purchases another vehicle. Discovered that one of my patented topical therapeutics is an excellent treatment for a rare condition called pemphigoid or pemphigus in addition to atopic dermatitis and other epidermal inflammations. 2022 was a tough year as two of my older friends passed in their early 90’s (both quite accomplished in their own ways). I also learned of several classmates passing as well. June 2022 update. My children and grandchildren are doing well. My eldest daughter is an attorney for an insurance company while my youngest is working with me in our business. My eldest daughter's three children are doing very well, with all of them maintaining 4.0 academic averages, the twins were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, and the oldest was elected president of his sophomore class. While the twins are doing very well and will enter high school in August, their older brother has maintained his status as a superstar, voted MVP at the regional convention of his youth group, paid umpire for league baseball games, part-time job at Kroger's, and still looking for ways to start his own business. The twin brother has taken up golf and we have a date to play together. The twin sister seems to have the summer off with her soccer league over for the season. Incidentally, the twins became B'nai Mitzvah (bar & bat mitzvah) on May 27, performed well reading directly from the Torah scroll, and had a celebratory party following which I can only say was high energy and dancing went on until midnight with an excellent DJ. I had an excellent dance partner (who, besides being a mechanical engineer and a senior executive overseeing European operations in an international company is a competitive ballroom dancer). Things are obviously not back to "normal" in the Ukraine, but my partners have made it through without a scratch. The extent of the damage was broken windows in their apartments, broken windows and a Russian break-in at the manufacturing facility, but no other damage (nothing small enough or worth stealing) and we are slowly getting back to business. I'm still cringing at the rise in fuel prices which is obviously a lot more than the increase in food costs. I still can't figure out why North American supply chain issues continue to plague us after two years. We collectively pray that Putin develops some fast moving, terminal condition. March 2022 update. I've been on edge for two weeks as Putin has invaded the Ukraine. I have amazing business partners there who manufacture nanodiamond crystals through a process known as detonation synthesis, refine them into various grades for different applications, and produce a variety of end products, several of which I had a hand in inventing. One of them is perfect for this year's oil price shocks: a diesel fuel additive that can improve combustion efficiency more than 30% to increase fuel economy and drastically reduce pollutants including soot. We already have a patent issued. You can find out more about what we are doing at our nanompi web site. I developed a product for treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis which is highly effective and my partners enhanced it so it can be used to treat a variety of conditions such as neuropathy and muscle spasms (e.g., hiccups), all patented. Our biggest problem is it works too well and most customers make only a single purchase. For those of you still interested in CT, I worked at the regional robotics competition (you have to see it) and spent several hours speaking with a Vice Principal. I also attended graduation in June which was held at The Aretha on the riverfront; Governor "Big Gretch" Whitmer was the commencement speaker, and the class walked off with $51 million in scholarships and awards (one student received $600,000). My long-haired dachshund (Jack) and I start most mornings with a long walk at Kensington Metro Park. The spring mating rituals are about to begin and in a few months we'll see the new Sandhill Cranes and waterfowl. Kensington is a great place to start the day, even in sub-zero temperatures June 2021 update. In May my younger daughter became engaged to her boyfriend of 5+ years. This month marks my eldest grandson's transition out of middle school. My granddaughter continues to develop as a solid soccer player.. Her fraternal twin is now playing Lacrosse. The eldest grandson plays baseball for a 14U team, the Oakland Reds, and also has a paid position as a baseball umpire and a golf caddy at the local country club where they belong and approaches the end of middle school with a 4.0 GPA. Since early winter my dachshund and I have been regular walkers at Kensington Metro Park, a truly spectacular place to start the day. I've lived one mile from the entrance since 2010 and have only now discovered the real park. Lots of regulars are there beginning around 6:00 AM. We get to see spectacular sunrises over Kent Lake with reflections of the sun, sky, and flora off the lake with myriad waterfowl and sandhill cranes. The winter snow and ice provide even more variations. Wildflowers are currently in bloom. A great place for photography. Kensington is very well maintained and sets a very high standard for regional parks. December 2020 update. The Covid 19 virus has stopped most of my plans dead in their tracks and has been generally devastating for business. However, good things continue to happen. We were awarded another patent for our topical therapeutics line of products. I also created a nasal spray that performs spectacularly for folks with nasal allergies. We added to our 3D printing line and a U.S. based partner is manufacturing and selling our nanodiamond enhanced 3D Filament in 1Q21. On the family side, my eldest is now an attorney at a major insurance company, her eldest was elected to the Junior National Honor, Society, and has been selected as part of a group of three students to advise the Asst. Supt. of Schools on the impact of remote learning. Just as important, all three grandchildren are maintaining 4.0 GPAs; of course this means I give them more books as presents. April 2020 update. 2019 was my year of 3D Printing (additive manufacturing). My company used its technology to bring out a line of printer nozzles that are coated with a nanodiamond chrome and a non-stick polymer. They are clearly the best nozzles on the market, producing exceedingly fine prints and not showing any wear even when printing with abrasive filaments. We have since added nanodiamond filled printing filament, a nanodiamond enhanced print bed coating, and will unveil our new bed automatic leveling. system. We also brought out a new topical therapeutic that is highly effective on rheumatoid arthritis, other joint pain, and even migraine headaches (wwwfmreliefcom).. My eldest grandson became bar mitzvah in December, my eldest daughter is now working as an attorney for a large insurance company, and my youngest daughter is working with me to build and maintain our websites and do marketing. This was to be a big year for our company, but that looks like Novel Corona Virus 19 has put a big crimp in our plans with multiple shows being postponed until later in 2020. To date, the biggest benefit of the virus is clean air, virtually devoid of automobile/truck based contaminants; a secondary benefit is parentsare home and interacting with their children which has been delightful to see as I walk around our Village of Milford neighborhood. BTW, I spent many years driving through small towns in rural Ohio to commute to see consulting clients in the big cities and always wondered what life would be like living in one; Milford has given me a pretty good taste of that although the scale is a bit more upscale and larger. When I look out the window there are deer (often does with fauns, turkeys, an occasional coyote, a large variety of birds at my feeders, and the occasional eagle soaring overhead. The newest attraction near my home is a dog park. On a busy day it is very interesting to watch the larger dogs a play, socializing, self-organizing into groups and group activities, and mostly ignoring people. The highlight of 2020, so far, is being on the cover of the March issue of a digital magazine. May 2019 update. After five years which included replacing my patent attorney, my patent application for a combustion catalyst was finally approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It significantly improves fuel economy and reduces emissions of diesel engines. It has also been one year since Karen died. Still very painful, but fortunately, lots of wonderful memories. Our daughters and grandchildren are still very strongly affected. It's hard to understand the degree of loss of someone who was always there, ""took care of business" without fanfare and with no desire for recognition, and was adored by so many people. October 2018. I've been privileged to serve as a director of the Cass Tech Alumni Association for the last two years. One of those privileges is to watch Principal Lisa Phillips at work (the football games are a bonus). Lisa is very involved with the students. Last year she recognized a special need: CT grads receive tens of millions of dollars in sch...Expand for more
olarships and awards each year, but 20-30% of them don't have the means to purchase what they need to begin life at a university. These are crucial necessities like bedding, towels, refrigerator, microwave, books, etc. Last year she began collecting money to help. This year she expanded her efforts and created the Bridge Program: students with needs filled out a form, people could contribute cash, purchase and deliver some of the items, or "adopt" a student...take care of the entire list. As it turned out, my wife and I "adopted" two wonderful young men. It turned out to be a real learning experience far beyond "shopping for college". Their circumstances were difficult, very difficult. One took four buses every day to get to CT. Another lived with his unemployed mother in an apartment building without water and without a working oven. With a lot of help things turned out well. Both of the boys are at school, one of them is also working as a barista at Starbucks in E. Lansing, and the mother has a job and has moved. We could use a lot more help and need volunteers for a male mentorship program...so if you would like to be a continuing part of our CT future please contact me. May 2018, (second update). On May 14, Karen, my wife of nearly 44 years passed. Karen was an avid conservationist, decades long trustee and for twelve years the president of the Michigan Nature Association which, in 2012, presented her with the Richard W. Holzman Award in recognition of her commitment to MNA. She was recognized by all who knew her as an exceptionally nice and sweet person who was always there when you needed help of any kind. She made everyone's life better. Best of all, she tolerated me. See the tribute in the 2018 issue of Michigan Nature Association magazine. May 2018 (update). Our RELIEF!™ products are beginning to appear in health food stores. I've also created a treatment for allergic rashes (including those of longstanding) and begun testing on subjects. So far, so good. (March 2018 update). Oldest daughter is now starting her third year reintroducing and running the Scripps spelling bee competition in the school did (but still not getting cooperation expanding across the district). Our oldest grandson won the 5th grade spelling bee at his school and participated in the Oakland County regional on March 18. He finished 16th out of 79 participants. Not bad for the first time. The winner appeared there for the fourth time. While I could spell most of the words, there were some OMG's, especially from German that I heard for the first time. Those words eliminated a lot of spellers. Our younger grandson (8) continues to demonstrate his ability to surprise...I played a recording of "The Ride of Die Walkure" from Wagners "Ring" Cycle and he promptly tells me the mythology...never ceasing to surprise. He also won the 3rd grade spelling bee. Our granddaughter has proven to be a natural athlete and is an up and coming soccer player. (November 2017 update). Tempus fugit! Oldest grandson turns 11 this week and is becoming an accomplished politician, elected first to the Student Council and then student body president. Hid two siblings were also elected to the Student Council. (My grandson the politician won his grade last school year). Daughter also sponsors a 30+ member spelling club. I'm serving as a Cass Tech Alumni Association director and still building our latest enterprise in nanotechnology. Just beginning a national consumer product roll-out of our RELIEF! products. In 2Q2018 we'll begin selling our enhanced 3D printer nozzles. If anyone is in our neighborhood on January 1, we have our annual open house (in Milford)...just let us know in advance if you're going to drop in. (July 2016 update) Two of the grandchildren are autodidacts who seem capable of teaching themselves anything that interests them. One was an expert on U.S. Presidents at age 5 as well as a great collector of maps for a couple of years after that and now (age 9) he is working on geology, rocks and minerals; the two "big" books in his library are the National Geographic World Atlas and the Oxford English Dictionary (compact edition). The other (now age 7) likes to build things including design circuits that do things and has made himself an expert on Greek, Roman and Egyptian gods and mythology as well as being able to decipher some hieroglyphics; I managed to add Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox to his agenda by telling him that Michigan has mythology, too. Actually spent 2-1/2 hours with the 7 y.o. that started with him asking about the 'angel of death' then going through the use of the scythe, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse , World War II including Albert Einstein and his prompting Roosevelt to build an atomic bomb and finally a PBS special (on-line) about Albert Einstein; he is one of the best questioners I've ever met. 1969 to 2013, consultant in telecommunications, information technology, educational technology, business operations, expense and consumption management; provided business process outsourcing for telecommunications management including global mobility solutions. 2011 started a new business, Nano Materials and Processes, Inc. using nanotechnology to enhance lubricants and materials and to create medical applications and products. We currently deliver lubricant additives, lubricant products, fuel additive (patent pending) that increases combustion efficiency and reduces pollution, enhanced resin systems (epoxy and the like) that are used in composite materials and are significantly stronger than off-the-shelf products and medical products. Workplace Our Nano Materials and Processes, Inc. business continues to progress. We have our engine oil and fuel additive in production in the U.S. with bottled product available. Based upon our market research, it appears that the use of nanodiamond in medical treatment is at its beginning so we are launching a medical grade nanodiamond product that is available for research and for treatment regimens in commercial quantities. We completed lab testing (mouse study) for our own medical product for treating burns and wounds. We also have a variation on the product, a topical product with no systemic effects, helps the body repair damage from arthritis and inflamed tendons, ligaments and joints and will be for sale on our web site. We also offer our electro-chemical coating process on a custom basis (it's been used for such exotic applications as coating cooling tubes in a nuclear reactor). Information is available on our web site. Recently submitted a patent application for a burn/wound treatment and for a topical treatment for arthritis and inflamed ligaments or tendons. We have a number of folks successfully using the arthritis/tendon/ligament treatment and are looking for more case studies to add to the monograph. Also registered a fuel additive with the EPA that is a combustion catalyst which improves combustion efficiency, significantly reducing emissions of NOX, hydrocarbons, CO and soot (diesel) as well as increasing octane and fuel economy. July 2017 Update. Our grandchildren are making strong progress. The Presidential and map whiz was the fourth grade spelling champion (it didn't hurt that my eldest daughter managed to reintroduce spelling bees into her local school system and insisted on relentless practice); he is also doing nicely playing league baseball and is a very reliable hitter. My grandson the Egyptologist is now interested in robotics and I've started him on Arduino programming; he is also doing nicely at soccer and flag football. Our granddaughter has turned into a dynamite soccer player. Our business, wwwnanompicom, has released three homeopathic remedies that have absolutely magical properties. The first aid treatment make things stop itching/hurting and heal at an amazing rate (including eczema as I found out this week). Our arthritis and inflammation treatment provides fast pain relief, arrests RA and actually causes the body to reverse damage from arthritis and other problems. We also released our diesel fuel additive that significantly improves fuel economy and reduces NOX. This summer we shall release our highly durable printer tips for additive (3D) printing that outlast standard printer tips by a large factor (testing is sill running, but we passed 4X a few weeks ago). A research institute in Singapore has ordered our ultra dispersed diamond crystals to develop products for one of their clients. I've also learned the frustration attached to setting-up an Amazon store...but I'll get over it. Spent some time in the Baltimore area in May. We sent to a wedding at the Gramercy Mansion (a real treat), then visited the National Gallery (saw the amazing Basile exhibit) and then the Library of Congress (first building) which is an absolute must-see. We then spent a few days near the Chesapeake with my (apparently non-related) 'namesake" (only a decade older). His wife can't believe our DNA testing didn't show us as cousins since we are so much alike. Behaved well enough to get invited back. I was asked to write a column for an online magazine. We'll see how that works out. The flowers I started planting six years ago have been putting on a great display this year. Still working on the gardens...there's room for lots more as well as improvement. Looking forward to a little travel with my wife and seeing family and friends and perhaps a few classmates
