Martha's Story
After graduating from Valencia H.S. in 1966, I attended CSUF for two years, before transferring to USC, from which I graduated in 1971 with a BachelorâÂÂs degree in Music (Voice). From there, I went to Florence, Italy, where I obtained a M.M. degree (voice and Italian) from Villa Schifanoia (Rosary College). I returned to the USA, and settled in New York City to pursue a career in singing. I did a great deal of performing there in opera, concerts, oratorio, and churches, before getting married in 1980 to Henry Mulkiewicz. We moved across the river to New Jersey, and live now in Monmouth Junction, where we just celebrated our 35th anniversary. We have a special-needs 30-year-old son, also named Henry, but whom we call âÂÂHeniuâ (Polish for âÂÂLittle HenryâÂÂ). We lived in Brussels for...Expand for more
awhile where my husband was working on a long-term consulting assignment. While living in Europe, we traveled to Ireland where I reunited with my cousins there, and with whom I continue to correspond frequently.
I taught voice for many years, as well as Music History at a local college. I was president of the NJ chapter of NATS (Nat. Assn. of Teachers of Singing) for four years. Professional interests had to take a back seat when my husband developed a rare autoimmune disease called WegenerâÂÂs Granulomatosis. He did make a full recovery from it, but our sonâÂÂs special needs have also dominated in recent years, when he developed epilepsy. Heniu is tall and physically strong, however, and seizures appear to be controlled with medication.
I am very much hoping to attend the reunion in July.
