Martha's Story
After High School, I went to U.C. Santa Barbara, in music, but found that I was too shy to stand up and sing in front of anyone. From there I went to St. John's College, in Santa Fe, N.M. I LOVED it and was there for 2 years. I met my husband, Randy, when we were both freshmen at St. John's, but I was dating other people and he left St. John's. Then I went to U.C. Berkeley to get my degree in Philosophy. Randy followed me there and we got married soon after I graduated. We lived in my parent's house while they were living in Hong Kong. My father was Director of Research for Dow in the Pacific. When Randy graduated from U. C. Berkeley in Chemical Engineering, we moved to New Jersey. We wanted to be close to New York City. We didn't realize that we couldn't afford to park there, much less do anything. Our son was born there. We DID, however find the Cloisters, which we could afford and which we absolutely loved. We left New Jersey after only 2 years and moved to Boulder,CO for Randy's job. I made the decision to stay home with our children and we have never regretted it. Our daughter, Laurel, was born in Colorado. She is named after Laurel Goff, who was someone I had always liked and admired at Acalanes. Boulder was lovely, but Randy was offered a job in Ireland and he took it. We lived in a little town between Limerick and Galway which suited us. We spent a lot of time exploring that country visiting sites like Yeat's tower and Coole Park. We traveled back and forth to other parts of Europe, including London numerous times and Italy. It was a great deal of fun and we loved it. When we moved back to the states we moved to Palo Alto, CA for all of 9 months which was too bad because we really liked Palo Alto. We ended up back in Boulder, but this time we had a house in the mountains above, with gorgeous views ...Expand for more
of everything to the east. It was a gorgeous house too . . . in fact, it was too much house and we couldn't afford the steadily increasing mortgage . . . one of life's lessons. Randy got a new job with Genentech, in South San Francisco, so we moved back to Palo Alto where our children grew up. When our son graduated from Paly, I went to work as an aide to a blind student at Gunn High School. I really enjoyed that work and found that I was instrumental in changing her life . . . very rewarding for me. I began to work with other disabled students which was a lot of fun. My parent's, who had moved back to Lafayette after my father retired, decided to sell their house and move up to Washington, to be closer to my siblings. We bought their house and have had the garden AND the house remodeled. It has been a labor of love. I attend church at the chapel at St. Mary's College in Moraga and I am the cantor there and a soloist. I got over my fear of singing in front of others. My husband retired so we have been able to travel up to Washington and back, visiting my parents and our son and his family in Portland,OR. Our son is the manager of the IT dept. for STASH tea and has a lovely wife and an, almost, 2 year old son. Our daughter is still single, lives in Oakland and is the Director of Development for a non-profit company in Walnut Creek. We see her often and she is one of the nicest people that we know . . . a lot like her namesake. My husband has been coaxed out of retirement as a consulting engineer and is working half of the time in Taiwan. That means that I am on my own half of the time, which I do not mind much because we talk every day on SKYPE and I have my dog, Posey ( a standard poodle), for companionship, and my daughter comes by often. We are planning a trip to Kyoto, Japan in the fall. So life is good.
