Martha 's Story

Life I moved to Oregon in about 1973 and did the 'back to the land' thing complete with geodesic dome, no electricty, outdoor plumbing, huge garden, etc. I had a small but succesful dairy goat farm. Because my son has cerebral palsy I moved back into town when he was school age to be closer to services for him. He is successful in his own right as he has beat all the negative outcomes the medical doctors predicted for him. Even though he can't talk or read or write, he does work full time and is in assisted living. He has a great sense of humor and is so animated that people swear they have had a conversation with him. I get a kick out of that. I was quite active physicaly during my 30's and was a competitive level bicyclist, both road bike and mountain biking. Shortly after I turned 40, while training for the STP (a one-day ride from Seattle to Portand, about 200 miles) I felt something pop in my head. My advice to anyone is if you start vomiting and have a violent headache acompanied by a very stiff neck, do not wait for medical assistance like I did. After 3 days of feeling like I was going to die, I nearly did. I was diagnosed with advanced viral spinal meningits, and although I did 'recover' I suffered from short-term memory loss, loss of most my math skills and other things we take for granted. I had to re-learn the layout of my little town of less than 20k population and I had trouble remembering what time of year it was, let alone the actual date. I do have my memory back, but if I get stressed or o...Expand for more
ver-tired I can have problems. I was able to get one more long ride in just 4 months after my diagnosis, the "Peach of a Century" in Salem, Ore. (a century is a 100 miler). After that I slowed down the bicycling and two years later had to quit completly when I developed some difficulty and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome that can make everyday life a challenge. But life is good. I am grateful for the miracle of life every day and make the most of it. I paint and beadweave (see photos) and have sold my artwork over the years, but not on any large scale, except when I had my stained-glass studio in the early 80's. Look up 'starving artist' in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of me :) Most of my art I give away and have friends that collect the angels I paint. After working 15 years as a hostital pharmacy tech, I am now working in hospital medical administration as an abstractor/coder, where I have been for nearly 5 years. I am currently living in beautiful Oregon with my husband. I bead and garden for 'entertainment', I rarely watch TV but use the one I have as a monitor for watching DVD's. We love to go to the coast and hope to retire there, but with the economy, who knows? All the trials and tribulations I have created in my life have made me closer to God and I am all the better for it. I have had an exceptional life peppered with interesting people. I like the quiet life I lead and have had a variety of employment and excitement to give me memories for my old age.
