Life I attended Cedar Key Elementary school the year of 1950-51 in the 6th grade. I am interested in other classmates of mine during that school year at Cedar Key Elementary. It was the fall of that school year, that a strong hurricane hit! After being advised by the older couple from whom we rented an apartment on the beach, we traveled in the night to our home in Gainesville, to escape the coming storm....It really hit Cedar Key HARD....Another incident happened during that school year....One day, when my mother, Ruby Marie Underwood, was teaching in the lower grades, a child lay down behind her while she was writing on the blackboard, and when my mother stepped back she tripped over the child thus hitting her elbow on the chalk tray crushing the bones. Some people in the staff, transported her to a hospital in Gainesville. A high school boy drove my mother's car, and me to Gainesville. I cannot recall the student's name. Does anyone remember this incident, and who it was that drove me to Gainesville?...... I was a student teacher at Sidney Lanier Elementary the winter quarter of 1971 where Mrs Dovell was the 2nd grade teacher, and with whom I did my student teaching. It was a mere coincidence that my mother, Ruby Marie Underwood, had taught at the same school the previous years of 1953-1960, which Mrs Dovell informed me was the reason she decided accept another student teacher assignment. After my graduation from the UF in the spring of 1971, I married my husband on 9-11-71, while he was stationed with the army at Ft.Gordon, Ga.
