Martha's Story
Well... to start following graduation... I went to Faulkner State for 2 years receiving an AAS. I hung around Mobile for another year or so before going to visit a cousin in Little Rock and moving there in the Spring of '72.
My cousin managed the lounge at a Sheraton Inn and I began working as a cocktail waitress there. Yes, that's right... and I was so uneducated about drinks I had no clue when someone ordered a double they didn't want very much mixer in the glass. But, I got it, did well, and had fun. I took the summer of '73 off to traipse around Europe with a backpack containing a few pair of jeans and shorts.
After 2 years, I decided it was time to get back to a serious job. Little Rock not being the best place to find employment when youÃÂÿve been out of the normal job market for a few years, my roommate and I packed our bags and headed to Big 'D'. The only people I knew in the Dallas area were my roommate's aunt in Rockwall and Uncle in Irving who I met while we were looking for a place to live and jobs. We found the place. I got the job. My roommate went back to Little Rock.
Just when I was about ready to head back to Mobile, I met my future husband. My co-worker tried to warn me away from him; but I just didn't see things as he did. My ex's next wife told me when they were separating that I hadn't lied to her about anything. He'd just never been like that around her until they married. Here is a great lesson I learned. If someone tells you something, if you trust them and they have no reason not to be honest about what they're telling you, believe themÃÂÿ just because you ...Expand for more
canÃÂÿt see it then doesnÃÂÿt mean it isnÃÂÿt so. AnywayÃÂÿ I met, married and divorced him in Dallas before moving back to Mobile in ÃÂÿ85. I gave some thought about going back to Dallas after my Dad died in ÃÂÿ89 but the economy was bad there at the time the placement agencies didnÃÂÿt even want people coming in.
SoÃÂÿ here IÃÂÿve been. I have 3 kids. My girls are 32 and 30. My son is 24. My oldest moved back home with her 3 girls, 12, 9, and 8, 5 years ago and I don't foresee her moving any time soon. My younger daughter is in East Texas with a daughter, 11, and a son, 9. My son graduated from Auburn. Didn't know where he would end up; but he said it will be somewhere warm that has or is very close to good airline connections... he is working at Clemson (SC) now. Last winter I kept reminding him it was really cold down here too! lol
I'm a bookkeeper, nothing too exciting. Unfortunately, I work for a company that has been adversely affected by the economic downturn. I may be out looking for work soon. In the meantime, I seem to think I have money to spend and have several remodel/renovation projects going at home... ah I wrote that a year ago and they are still going on. :-( Anyone out there who does trim work? for free? lol
I was never one for laying out in the sun when I was younger. Now, I find going to the beach with a book to read very relaxing. Maybe it's just all those negative ions created by the moving water? With kids and remodeling ya think I need it? Ah, if you have a nice quiet place, you could always invite me over. LOL
