Marti's Story
I'm currently living in Marin but have lived in Boston, L.A. and San Francisco. After graduating from Berkeley, I got married, moved to San Francisco, and taught math at the middle and high school level in S.F.
After about 8 years I got divorced and decided to make my fortune so I did what everyone in the early 80's did that I knew: went to get an MBA. I went to Harvard Business School which I found was not for me-too many case studies- so I transferred to Anderson Business School at UCLA which had a mix of case studies and traditional books-just right.
At Anderson I had a great time and felt I was on vacation after Harvard. I went sailing,to Beverly Hills and shopped quite a bit, and found I loved going to the many parties the other students had. I could wear shorts instead of bundling up for the cold.
I could work part time because the work load was different for me so I worked at 20th Century Fox and got to hob nob with the stars. I really didn't see too many stars but did actually get paid to go see any movie I wanted since I was in market research and they wanted me to know about the current actors. What a perfect job while going to school. I still have the movie bug and go to most of the movies that come out.
After graduation from Anderson, I moved back up to San Francisco and worked in finance at B of A which I didn't enjoy. I am really more of a "people...Expand for more
" person and got really tired of looking at spreadsheets. I decided to go back to teaching in 1989 and have been at Galileo Academy in S.F., by Ghiardelli Square, since then. I actually have a view of the water (through 2 buildings. I teach 2 periods a day and spend the rest of the day managing the math dept of 14 people and helping to integrate technology throughout all of the courses within the school. I'm more of the "nudger" than a techie.
I enjoy going salsa dancing quite a bit at a place in Emeryville called Allegra or whatever kind of dancing appeals to me at Ashkenanz which has a huge variety of bands that come to play. I also do the Lindy- but stop at being thrown way up in the air- my bones are getting a bit older.
I live right by Mount Tam so I take advantage and hike as much as I can. It's about a 20 minute walk to prime hiking. I live in a "charming" little town called San Anslemo where I'm just 2 blocks from the main street with lots of shops and restaurants.
I spend some of my evenings listening to a lot of music through Rhapsody, Pandora, or Musicography and make playlists to listen to later. I also go to Tibetan Buddhist teachings which I first got interested in 20 years ago but got more involved in about 8 years ago. I host a meditation class every Monday night. I tend to have a pretty intense, doing mode so I've found meditation quite valuable.
