Martin's Story

Life To all of you who graduated many years ago, I issue you a challenge - update your Bio! My high school years started at Bassett High School, in La Puente. I returned to the San Gabriel Valley for some visits in 1974 (Nick, Barb, John, Bill, Isabel, Mindy, Dorie). I see a lot of friends stayed in that area. I moved to Pleasanton 1 week before the start of my senior year. Graduated from Amador Valley HS. For those who have never been to Pleasanton, it is a great town. I get the feeling, however, that it was better before I moved there. It had a real small-town coziness that was lost when the building boom hit in the 70's, and has probably continued through today. I've read many recollections of former Amador Valley residents - lots of memories. I graduated from San Jose State University in 1978 (I took the 6 year plan...) and was commissioned into the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant and became stationed at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota. I strongly encourage anyone to visit the Northern Tier states, like North/South Dakota, and Montana. If anyone wants to know what the backbone of our country looks like - get to know a native of those states. Forget about how cold it can get (but don't ignore the weather!). The nicest, most trustworthy, and hardest working people can be found there. Some of best friendships I ever developed were in and around Minot, North Dakota. I married the former Elizabeth Bellah (Leigh High School, University of Santa Clara) while in college. We finally had the time and opportunity to travel a bit recently, which includes vacations in Puerto Vallerta, Guadalajara, western Caribbean, and Trois Riveres, Canada, and Italy last summer. This past November 2009 we took a river cruise from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Budapest, Hungary. Can't wait to take another river cruise! After the Air Force, I moved back to San Jose and worked in restaurant management. 1985 - Allyson was born. 1988 Natalie was born. Liz & I transferred to Austin in 1988. I rode a motorcycle for the years after leaving the Air Force, but stopped when I moved to Texas. Never got hurt, and miss the ride between San Jose and Santa Cruz. Now - being the responsible person that I am - I have a big disability insurance policy that won't let me ride (or pilot a plane, or skydive). Is that a sign I've become an old fart too? Allyson attended Baylor University, and was into the last year of earning nursing degree. She took time off from her degree plan to be near her nice boyfriend stationed in San Diego. Allyson and Billy were married in early October 2011, and they have made their first home together in Rio Ranch, New Mexico. They now have 2 of the cutest kids ever! Natalie graduated from the University of Houston, and then attended graduate school at UT San Antonio where she completed her MFA. She was captain of the university marching band color guard, and was much busier in college life than I ever was. Liz left Dell Inc a year or so ago. I left Dell after 10 years, and spent 2 years at cross-town rival Apple. I'm 99% retired now thanks to all those Dell stock options! Liz and I thought of building a 2nd home on the Rogue River near Grants Pass, Oregon. After living in central Texas all these years, I guess we'll have to have 2 homes. I'd like one home in Oregon, and one home in the Hill Country. Over the past year or so, I've gotten into contact with so many long-lost friends. Use Classmates as much as you can and you'll be rewarded. For those who want to know... my older brother Ray is fine, married (again), was living in the Gold Country of California, but now lives in Tillamook County, Oregon. My sister Valerie is fine, married, living in western Oregon as well as the big island of Hawaii. My youngest brother Alan is fine, and living near Spokane, in the Inland Empire of northern Idaho/eastern Washington. My father retired, was a snowbird - living half the year in Jojotepec, Mexico, and the other half in Boise, ID. His wife, Middie, passed away several years ago. He lived full-time in Boise, Idaho; he passed away in 2010. It doesn't seem that long ago we were on our mini family reunion in Washington. We all miss him so much. My mother passed away before she knew her fantastic granddaughters. School I think of myself having two high school biographies. At Bassett HS I know I was an above average student who really enjoyed a couple sports. I played a bit of tennis just as the technology was changing from wood to aluminium. I still remember the "thrill" of a senior girl commenting on my tan, and how nice it looked. I also made myself into the best football player that weighted 150 lbs I could be. I missed having classes with a lot of my Edgewood chums - and when I found out in spring of 71 we were moving, I didn't want to tell anyone about it. On the day I turned 17 I moved from La Puente. My high school life continued in the Bay Area at Amador Valley HS, and a lot of the spark was left behind at Bassett. I didn't play sports again. My spirits lifted when I dated the head song-leader from the pep squad. I made 3-4 fairly close friends and to this day I've gotten back in touch wi...Expand for more
th most all of them. Overall, my experiences made me commit to have my kids go from K to 12 from one home - which we've done so far. Good for them! College I worked my way through college, which is probably not much different than most of the San Jose State University alumni. I quickly decided to become a Business major, but I became afflicted with a malady sometime in my sophomore year. When I had a choice to go to some classes or cut classes, I'd cut instead to sit in the quad to watch (girls, dogs playing in the fountain, whatever). I decided to drop out for a year before I did permanent damage to my grades. It was around this time that I began dating my future wife, Liz. I knew as our relationship became more serious, I needed to get serious about going back to school. Upon my return, I knew I wanted to get into AFROTC, so I really buckled down to get off academic probation. Once accepted into ROTC, I was able to work less at my job due to the stipend I received from the Air Force. Overall, my favorite classes were Art of China (a lasting impression to this day), Marketing, some early science classes, and Rugby (until the SJSU football players joined in their off-season and tried to kill us all). I graduated, was commissioned into the Air Force, and became stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota. Workplace I am not currently working. I worked for a start-up government contracting company and then I realized the owner was crazy. I worked for Apple Inc. here in Austin. I'm enjoyed it until I didn't!; it has pained me to see how much Dell has changed since I originally wrote my bio. I ended my days on an executive-level tech support team. Another in a series of re-organizations finally caught up with me. Before that I was a project manager with the Engineering Maintenance team (what a great, fun bunch!) but most of my time was as a Training Specialist in the manufacturing environment. I began my career as a Portables (notebooks) manufacturing supervisor. For the first time in my life I found a job that chewed me up and spit me out. I made a lateral move into the training department, and discovered that I excelled in training people. 3 years later, the notebook line of business moved to Nashville, TN., and I quickly learned the manufacturing process of desktop systems. I facilitated classroom training, and created training modules covering a wide variety of subjects. To get here I: worked for Car Tapes, Inc. at Montgomery Ward in Rosemead, CA. I worked at Valley DeCor in Pleasanton, CA. I worked at Shakey's Pizza Parlor in San Jose, CA. I spent a month or so at Memorex in San Jose, CA. I was an Executive Support Officer at the 91st Field Missile Maintenance Squadron, Minot AFB, ND. I worked at IBM in Austin, TX. I managed several Delaware Sub Shops in Austin, TX. I worked at IKON Office Solutions (formerly Texas Copy) in Austin, TX. And for 10 years I worked in a variety of positions at Dell. Military As a kid I always wanted to fly. When the time came, I was accepted into the Air Force ROTC program at SJSU. My boot camp was at Vandenberg AFB, where I was part of the "worst" flight of the encampment. We had the best grades, and had the best athletes - but when it came to have the inspections or drill and ceremony taken into account - we sucked. Upon graduation from SJSU, I spent 6 weeks at Keesler AFB, MS in the Executive Support Officer school. It turned out I was qualified to fly, but almost everyone else was more qualified than me, so I flew a desk. I trained to be an Exec, but I was not prepared to be the exec my first day at the 91st Field Missile Maintenance Squadron, Minot AFB, ND. But I learned ASAP. Over time, our squadron went from laughingstock to the best, and my last year there we were selected as Outstanding Unit Award winners. The best people I ever met were stationed there. Taking the cold into consideration, I can honestly say that North Dakota is a great place to live (though certainly not for everyone). I spent 4 year there and then I separated to join my wife back in San Jose, CA. I was awarded the Commendation Medal for my efforts (as the Awards and Decoration officer - I wrote my own citation, but in all honesty - it was deserved...). We had an opportunity to move from San Jose to Austin over 20 years ago, and accepting that opportunity to move was the best decision we could have made. We finally convinced some family in California to move here, and I think they'd agree this was the best decision that could have been made for their kids where high school is concerned. Both have excelled so far this year, and we're so proud of them, and so glad to have family close too. All y'all need to consider a move to Texas! I have several ways I like to relax. I read, and read almost anything. I also like to exercise - not like crazy, but to the point where I'm relaxed. I would like to put another couple of stamps on my passport too. I'll need to upload some pictures from our river cruise. At this time I stake a claim on Canada, Mexico, Panama, New Zealand, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Jamaica, Cayman, and that's it for now.
