Marty's Story

I joined the Navy in Oct. 1960 spent four year on activity duty, two years on Coronado Island California, one year at Moffett Field, in Mountain View Calif. Five months Barbers Point Hawaii, and nine months in Adak Alaska. I married at age 30 in KCK, was married for 25 years and have two wonderful boys age 36 and 34 and six grand children. I have been divorced for thirteen years and live in Shawnee Ks. I got remarried June 2013 I sold my business the 1st of august 07 an auto repair center in Shawnee, Ks . I had been there 26 yrs. I'm back into aviation as a flight instructor. Before owning my business I worked for Cessna Aircraft, I started in Aviation in the Navy as a flight engineer in a Anti Submarine Patrol Squadron, that was stationed in San Diego, Calif. at NAS North Island, Coronado Island in the bay of San Diego. We flew Lockheed Neptunes (like you really know what that is) searching for submarines, and taking pictures of any shipping in our part of the Pacific Ocean and send it to Naval Intelligence so they could keep track of all ships all over the world. Our patrols would last 18 to 20 hours at couple thousand feet to two hundred feet, it got exciting at times. I have been to Hawaii, three different times and flew out of NAS Barbers Point, that was awesome for a 19 year old from Kansas, Toto! Then we moved the Squadron to NAS Moffett Field, in Sunnyvale Calif. Its close to San Francisco, we were there about one years and then we moved to Adak, Alaska, that was not fun, we were closer to Russia, then the main land of the good old USA, the weather was horrible up there lots of snow and cold weather, we saw the sun shine for two days in the nine months we were there. When I was discharge out of the Navy, I came back to K.C. and worked for two months for Montgomery Wards selling mens cloths 7th and minnesota ave.I t...Expand for more
hen move to Borger Texas and attended Frank Phillips collage for two years I worked for a Cessna Dealer, I then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and attended Spartan School of Aeronautics for about three yrs and received my Commercial pilots license, multi engine rating and Flight Instructors rating and then moved back to Borger, Texas, and went to work for a Cessna Distributor ship, we sold Cessna Ag wagons (crop duster) I demo the the Ag wagons to Ag operators and farmers, did charter work mostly for Phillips Oil company, ran a flight school and did flight instruction, it was lots of fun and exciting. I worked there about two years, was offered a job as a corporate pilot with a large company in Independence Mo, so I moved back to K.C and the job didnt happen they didnt buy an airplane. I went to work for a Cessna Dealer until I started my business in 1981 and here I am today. I have two Boys ages 40 and 42 The oldest boy lives in Arlington, Washington is a firefighter/paramedic, he has a six year old son and they just adopted a six year old girl and a new baby boy two months old. The youngest lives in Shawnee, Ks. He is a maintenance supervisor for a large land management Co., out of Colorado, they have five commercial properties on the Plaza, in K.C. Mo. He has a son ten years old, a six year old son and a five year old boy. I love my grandsons and enjoy playing with them and the joy they have! If I can keep up with them !! Having grandchildren is such a wonderful experience and makes life feel like I have done something worthwhile and rewarding. I'm now working at the Airline History Museum at the old down town airport in K.C. Mo. I'm on the board of directors and I work on the airplanes, equipment and give tours five days a week. The lady in the picture with me in a suite is my sister Becky (glaze)Myers she lives in Lawrence Ks.
