Marvin's Story

On Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, Marv lost his 2 1/2-year battle with cancer. He leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. He was a big man with a big heart and when he would reach out with that big hand of his, he could pull you up, turn you around and head you in the right direction. If you were doing business with him, his handshake was as good as his word. If you were his friend, his handshake was warmth, love and trust, whenever you needed it. He touched so many lives with those big hands. They were strong from hours of hard work. He taught many young men the value of a hard day’s work and gave them the life tools they needed to be successful. His hands were also very gentle whenever he was holding a baby or helping to guide the many girls who grew up around him. If you knew Marv, you knew he was a family man. He loved his children and grandchildren. The greatest joy in his life was the time he got to spend with them. It didn’t matter if it was baseball, basketball, cheerleading, choir concerts or the fall festival at the school. He was right there enjoying it all. right there helping. If his grandchildren wanted to build a cat house, he helped them; if they wanted to learn how to use tools to build something, he showed them; if they wanted to ride a bicycle or a go-cart, he taught them. His love of family was bigger than he was, and though he may only have brought two daughters into this world, his family was extended to include each and every one of those young men and girls who were drawn into his life, and each and every one of his friends. He also has a very large family unit of sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a mentor and teacher to all of them. His love and family reached not just across the United States, but beyond its borders. Wherever he went he made friends, always quick with a smile and a handshake. From the tons of concrete he poured as a contractor, to the million miles he drove as a cross-country truck driver, to the days he spent as a construction superintendent, he never met a stranger. Everyone was his friend. Yes, he will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and many, many friends.
