Mary's Story
After graduating Jupiter High I went to PBJC and got my AA in business.(1976) Joined family business MACK Fabrics in Jupiter for five years. Was female leader for Boy Scouts for new Venture group. Met future husband August 1978. Attended FAU(1981) for one year and was a Resident Assist. Major Sociology and Minor Psychology. Transferred to University of North Florida(1982) rec'd B.A. Started work on Masters.in SOC/PSY.
Also that year married Jeff Martin. Moved from Jax 1983 to work with friends on computer programs for Apple
Computers and Managed Apartments at Riviera Beach. In 1984 we moved to Boca Raton as Jeff began career at Boca Police Dept. I began work at Internal Revenue Service as a Revenue Officer and Quality Improvement Team Facilitator.
After three years Jeff moved on to US Customs and I worked at IRS till November 1992.
Went on Bed rest due to problems with pregnancy. (Already lost four) Patrick was born January 1993. Left IRS- Patrick and I got to know one another going to play groups, parks, beach, places of interest, zoos. Life was very very good.Life was fun.
In 1997 we were transferred to Puerto Rico.
After four years was transferred to Washington D.C.(2001) for a three year tour.Then back to West Palm Beach, Florida. However 9-11 changed all that. The onset of the Dept of Homeland Security froze our plans and we were stuck in Northern Virginia. Unable to leave we hunkered down till Patrick was done with school. the hospital after surgery he had complications that the hospital missed. During Patrick's first week of college Jeff died.(Sept 1, 2011.) Jeff was a larger then life kinda guy and left a very large hole in our lives. Being widowed at 55 was not in my game plan. We were six months shy of our 30th wedding anniversary.
Jeff's twin died six months later.Then his dad died 5 months later.Then a brother in laws younger sister and children was killed 2 months after that. Next an uncle died 3 months later. My dad just died July 14,2014. Life hasn't been easy these last few years.
Patrick is still going to college and doing quite well. We still live in Northern Virginia. My mom no longer lives in Jupiter. I fill my days visiting friends and family. I help an organizing business. I have taken a class to be certified as a D.C. Tour Guide. I have flipped several houses and have some rental property. I am presently looking at real estate areas for my next project.
I am not sure what my future will be. Or where I will end up. All the hopes and dreams Jeff and I had are no longer possible. I have found out that grieving for the person is only part of the process- there is the loss of the plans, the retirement to do list, the life of growing old together. I do know I still have much to do.....much to see.....many people to visit........and if so blessed when Patrick is older and marries.... grandchildren. Then I can go to playgroups, the park, the beach, zoos, places of interest.And life will be very fun and very very good.
